Iron ore futures on the Dalian Commodity Exchange fell 1.87% to 709 yuan ($97.30) per tonne, but were up 0.35% for the week. Similarly, iron ore futures for May 2025 on the Singapore Commodity Exchange fell 0.85% to $98.60 per tonne, but also posted a 1.08% gain for the week.

Iron ore demand in the short term is expected to increase as steelmakers actively replenish stocks ahead of the Labor Day holiday, according to brokerage Hexun Futures.

On the Shanghai exchange, construction steel prices fell nearly 0.5%, hot-rolled coil fell 0.31%, regular coil fell 1.17% and stainless steel fell 0.59%.

However, there are some positive signs in the market. According to ANZ, steel production in China recovered in March, reaching 93 million tons thanks to improved mill profit margins. At the same time, finished steel inventories at mills and traders also decreased, reflecting signs of a gradual improvement in domestic consumption, despite the challenging macroeconomic environment.

In terms of policy, the US has signaled its willingness to reduce tariffs on China to ease trade tensions. However, Washington has not yet taken any concrete action. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the current tariffs are unsustainable, but also affirmed that the US will not make unilateral concessions. This development continues to put pressure on the outlook for steel consumption, especially in the context of China's real estate sector still facing many difficulties.
