According to a report from Mane Kancor Spices Company, 2025 will be the fourth consecutive year of decline in global pepper production due to the impact of climate change. This situation is affecting many major producing countries such as Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Brazil and Vietnam.
In India, despite increased supplies in March, domestic demand far outstripped supply. Crop damage in Karnataka has led to a drop in pepper production. Farmers and speculators are holding onto their stocks, with no selling pressure, which could see domestic black pepper prices rise sharply in the coming months.
The situation in Indonesia is not much better. Pepper supply to the market is still very limited. Unusual weather, reduced productivity and increased labor costs mean this year’s crop could be much lower than previous years.
Many farmers have abandoned pepper cultivation in favor of other crops such as coffee and durian because of higher profits. Indonesia now exports mainly to China, Vietnam, the United States and Europe.
In Vietnam, productivity has fallen slightly, but rising pepper prices have benefited farmers. With good income from other crops, especially coffee and durian, pepper growers are in no rush to sell.
Pepper prices are forecast to remain high this year. The US remains Vietnam’s largest pepper export market, followed by Germany, India, China and the UAE.
Sri Lanka is expected to start a new harvest in May, but production in 2025 is estimated to be down by up to 30%. This will further exacerbate the global supply shortage.
In 2024, Sri Lanka's pepper exports reached a record of more than 25,900 tons, up nearly 85% over the previous year, helping the country rise to 6th place in the world. The largest consumer market is India, accounting for 92% of Sri Lanka's total exports.
In Brazil, although demand remains stable, exporters are having difficulty sourcing raw materials due to rising prices and limited supply. Pepper production in 2025 is forecast to be lower than last year, while new shipments are expected to only start arriving on the market from August. Therefore, pepper prices in Brazil are expected to remain stable thanks to high demand from Europe and the US combined with reduced production.
