Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dak Nong province, Mr. Ngo Xuan Dong, said that the locality has issued a document to propagate and recommend people to use standard white canvas bags when preserving pepper. The goal is to prevent the risk of contamination with Sudan Red, an industrial colorant banned from use in food.

According to Mr. Dong, recently some batches of Vietnamese pepper exported have been warned to be contaminated with Sudan Red. After verification, the main reason is that people use colored packaging or tarpaulins that do not meet food standards during the harvesting and storage process. This causes the colorant to contaminate the pepper.

Although it is only a local phenomenon occurring in a few small batches, because Sudan Red is an industrial chemical banned from use in food, early warning is needed to avoid affecting the reputation of the pepper export industry.

Pepper price today May 27 in the world market

In the world market, based on quotes from export enterprises and export prices in various countries, the International Pepper Association (IPC) has updated the prices of pepper of all types traded in the international market on May 26 (local time) as follows:

Indonesian Lampung black pepper prices increased slightly compared to yesterday at USD 7,470/ton (up 0.51%). In addition, Muntok white pepper prices also remained unchanged compared to yesterday at USD 10,185/ton (up 0.5%).

Brazilian black pepper ASTA 570 price remained unchanged from yesterday at $6,650/mt.

Malaysia's ASTA black pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,150/ton. Meanwhile, the country's ASTA white pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $11,850/ton.

Prices of all types of pepper in Vietnam remained unchanged compared to yesterday. Of which, the price of 500 gr/l black pepper in Vietnam reached 6,700 USD/ton; 550 gr/l reached 6,800 USD/ton.

Similarly, Vietnam's white pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,700/ton.

In the market, domestic and international pepper prices are showing opposite trends, reflecting the imbalance between supply and demand in the context of climate change and unstable production. In the short term, purchasing prices are forecast to fluctuate within a narrow range, depending on export progress and the stockpiling trend of processing enterprises and international traders.

In Vietnam, pepper export output continues to decline, while Indonesia recorded strong growth in both output and exports. This shows that Indonesia is taking advantage of the opportunity to expand its global market share.

In the domestic market, pepper has entered a period of stagnation. Low prices and high input costs have caused many farmers to reduce investment or switch to higher value crops such as durian or avocado. A cautious mentality is dominating both growers and traders.
