According to a report by the World Gold Council (WGC), Vietnam's demand for gold bars and gold coins decreased by 15% year-on-year to 12 tons of gold in the first quarter of this year. However, this figure still increased by 46% compared to the fourth quarter of 2024. In addition, Vietnam's demand for gold jewelry in the first quarter of this year also decreased by 15% to 3.5 tons. However, compared to the fourth quarter of 2024, demand increased slightly by 5%. According to WGC, the scarcity in the domestic gold market has increased the gap between domestic and world gold. In addition, the increase in gold prices has affected consumer demand.

World gold prices rose slightly to $3,239 an ounce, $7 higher than yesterday. At the close of trading on May 2 (early morning of May 3, Vietnam time), the S&P 500 index increased 1.47% to close at 5,687 points, marking the ninth consecutive increase and recording the longest streak of increases since November 2004. The Dow Jones index added 564 points, equivalent to 1.39% to 41,317 points. Similarly, the Nasdaq Composite index increased 1.51% to close at 17,978 points.
