World gold price today
World gold prices turned down, with spot gold falling $17.8 to $3,299.4 an ounce. Gold futures last traded at $3,295 an ounce, down $18.5 from early this morning.
A rebound in the dollar and profit-taking pressure after prices hit a two-week high earlier in the session sent gold down slightly on Thursday, with the US Dollar Index rising 0.3%, making bullion more expensive for holders of foreign currencies.
According to senior analyst Jim Wycoff of Kitco Metals, gold's decline due to profit-taking and the recovery of the US dollar was limited by safe-haven demand in the context of investors gradually losing confidence in government bonds.
Investor concerns were heightened after US President Donald Trump's massive tax bill passed by just one vote, he added.
The bill is expected to add about $3.8 trillion to the federal government's $36.2 trillion debt over the next decade, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Last week, Moody's downgraded the U.S. sovereign credit rating by one notch, citing concerns about the country's growing $36 trillion debt.
In a context of political and financial instability, gold is expected to continue to act as a safe haven asset sought by investors.
New data showed U.S. business activity accelerated in May as the U.S.-China trade war cooled. But Mr. Trump’s sweeping tariffs on imports have raised prices for companies and consumers.
Trade deals from the US administration are expected to be announced in the coming weeks and they will play a key role in shaping gold prices for the rest of the year, said Zain Vawda, analyst at MarketPulse at OANDA.
With the domestic gold bar price decreasing slightly and the world gold price listed at Kitco at 3,299.4 USD/ounce (equivalent to about 104 million VND/tael converted according to Vietcombank exchange rate, excluding taxes and fees), the difference between the domestic and world gold prices is about 16.5 million VND/tael.
