Oil prices continued to fall last week due to concerns about weakening global demand amid a strong supply outlook, according to Oilprice. With a drop of more than 8% for Brent and a drop of about 7.7% for WTI, oil prices extended last week's decline. However, this week's slide was about four times longer.
Data showed the US economy contracted in the first quarter, while activity data in China showed the manufacturing sector was shrinking.
In addition, US job growth slowed slightly in April, with nonfarm payrolls rising by 177,000 last month, down from a revised 185,000 in March. It is still too early for the labor market to see the impact of Mr. Trump’s ever-changing tariff policies.
"The market is now completely dependent on OPEC, even the tariff war is no longer an important issue," said energy expert Scott Shelton of United ICAP.
Earlier, Reuters reported that officials from Saudi Arabia, the de facto leader of OPEC+, had told allies and industry experts that they did not want to support the oil market by cutting supply further.
OPEC+ is cutting production by more than 5 million barrels per day.
