Bao Yen District People's Committee in collaboration with Lao Cai Province Department of Science and Technology organized a ceremony to announce the certification mark for two local agricultural specialties, "Bao Yen Dragon Fruit" and "Hong Cam Royal Banana". The granting of the mark marks an important step in the journey of building a brand, expanding the consumption market and enhancing the value of agricultural products of Bao Yen District in particular and Lao Cai Province in general.
Hong Cam Royal Banana is a banana variety that was brought to Cam Con commune about 20 years ago. Over time, the royal banana tree has not only adapted well but also gradually become a key crop in the locality. Up to now, the whole commune has about 70 hectares of royal bananas that are being harvested, with stable output and increasingly clear output. Hong Cam Royal Banana is now available at many wholesale markets in the province and is sought out by traders from other provinces and cities to order in large quantities.

To improve the quality and value of the products, Cam Con commune has coordinated with specialized agencies to complete legal documents, ensure food hygiene and safety, attach traceability stamps and geographical indications. This is a necessary condition for Hong Cam royal bananas to become OCOP products and gradually affirm their position in the market of mountain specialty agricultural products.
Red-fleshed dragon fruit is also a product with great economic potential in Bao Yen district. Currently, this crop is concentrated in Bao Ha, Viet Tien and Minh Tan communes with a total area of about 50 hectares. Red-fleshed dragon fruit is easy to grow, adapts to many types of soil including poor soil, has few pests and diseases and can be harvested in many batches during the year. On average, each hectare of red-fleshed dragon fruit in Bao Yen yields 32 - 35 tons of fruit per year.
Notably, organic dragon fruit products in Minh Tan commune have been recognized as meeting the provincial 3-star OCOP standard since 2020, showing the right direction in sustainable and safe farming and enhancing product value.
In recent years, Hong Cam royal banana and Bao Yen red dragon fruit have been key products for poverty reduction, new rural construction and socio-economic development in Bao Yen district. To increase the economic efficiency of the products, Bao Yen district has developed a synchronous value chain through building, managing and developing product brands.
Being granted a certification mark will make it easier for these two products to access the market, especially modern distribution systems, retailers and e-commerce platforms. This is also a necessary condition to move towards building a closed agricultural value chain, from raw material areas, preliminary processing to consumption.
In the coming time, the locality will continue to support people to improve production capacity, improve technical standards, expand organic farming areas and develop concentrated growing areas. At the same time, the district focuses on building product images through labels, packaging, traceability and brand promotion to expand domestic consumption markets, aiming for future exports.
The protection of the trademarks “Hong Cam Royal Banana” and “Bao Yen Dragon Fruit” is not only a legal turning point but also an important strategy to help local agricultural products increase their value, contributing positively to the goal of sustainable poverty reduction and new rural construction in Bao Yen district. |
