At the end of the session, Brent oil price decreased by 0.7% to 64.91 USD/barrel, WTI oil also decreased correspondingly to 61.57 USD.
By the morning of May 22, the decline continued: Brent fell to 64.57 USD/barrel (down 0.11%) and WTI to 61.12 USD/barrel (down 0.18%). Crude oil contracts in Tokyo also fell sharply by 1.8% to 55,550 JPY/barrel.
Oil prices had risen slightly earlier after CNN reported that US intelligence said Israel may be preparing to attack Iran's nuclear facilities — a move that could risk disrupting oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz. However, the announcement of new US-Iran talks quickly extinguished the rally.
Iran is OPEC’s third-largest oil producer. If there is a conflict, supply could temporarily fall by up to 500,000 barrels per day, but according to Rystad Energy, OPEC+ has the capacity to compensate.
In addition, pressure on prices also came from negative US data: crude oil inventories increased by 1.3 million barrels, gasoline increased by 800,000 barrels and distillate fuel increased by 600,000 barrels - showing weaker demand.
Meanwhile, Kazakhstan's oil output rose 2% in May despite its commitment to cut under the OPEC+ deal, contributing to a more abundant global supply and putting pressure on prices.
