Good control of discharge
With hundreds of businesses operating, most of which are related to food and beverage services, accommodation, transportation and small-scale production, the amount of wastewater generated in Con Dao is very significant. Previously, most households and facilities treated themselves and discharged directly into the environment, posing a high risk of pollution. This situation poses an urgent need for a centralized wastewater treatment system to protect the environment and ensure sustainable development for the island district.
Based on this request, the Provincial People's Committee approved the project "Collecting and treating wastewater in the central area of Con Dao district" according to Decision No. 1422/QD-UBND in June 2019, with the Con Dao District People's Committee as the investor. Phase 1 of the project has a total investment of more than 198 billion VND, using the provincial budget.
Mr. Bui Dang Tuan Anh, Acting Director of the Project Management Board for Investment, Construction and Land Fund Development of Con Dao District, said that from December 2023, phase 1 of the project will officially operate, contributing to fundamentally changing the way wastewater is treated in the area.
Instead of spontaneous discharge as before, wastewater from restaurants, hotels, eateries... is led to the factory through the collection system. Here, all wastewater is treated to column A according to QCVN 14:2008/BTNMT before being discharged into the environment through the biological pond, in accordance with the district's technical infrastructure design.
The project “Collection and treatment of wastewater in the central area of Con Dao district” has a total collection basin area of 899 hectares, the treatment station area is about 1.5 hectares. When both phases are completed, the station will reach a capacity of 3,500m³/day and night. |
Continue to increase capacity
According to statistics, Con Dao district has about 945 operating business households, in addition, the number of tourists coming to the island district is constantly increasing. According to Mr. Bui Dang Tuan Anh, in phase 1, the wastewater treatment capacity of the project reached about 1,000m³/day and night, while in reality, the amount of collected wastewater has reached about 1,300m³/day and night.
Currently, Con Dao district is implementing procedures to implement phase 2 of the project, with an additional capacity of 2,500m³/day and night, bringing the total capacity of the entire system to 3,500m³/day and night. This project has a total investment of more than 60 billion VND, and is in the process of appraising the feasibility study report and granting environmental licenses. When completed, it will treat all domestic wastewater from businesses and households in the district center.
According to the Management Board of Investment, Construction and Land Fund Development Project of Con Dao district, due to the characteristics of wastewater in Con Dao district being mainly domestic wastewater, the wastewater treatment plant will apply mechanical, chemical and microbiological treatment measures - SBR batch biotechnology, ensuring that the output wastewater meets QCVN 14:2008/BTNMT - column A. Wastewater after treatment that meets the standards will be discharged into An Hai lake, contributing to preventing saltwater intrusion, maintaining groundwater levels and serving public purposes such as watering plants, washing roads, etc. In case of an incident, the wastewater will be stored in the incident lake, then circulated to the collection tank for re-treatment.
