Director of Hanoi Department of Education and Training: No tricky test questions, ready for 10th grade entrance exam

TPO - Speaking with Tien Phong, Mr. Tran The Cuong, Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, said that he has reviewed 210 testing sites and completed preparations to organize the entrance exam for 10th grade of specialized and non-specialized high schools from June 7-9.

The exam has the same structure as the sample exam.

Students are about to take the 10th grade entrance exam. Can you share about the exam and what are the new points that candidates need to pay attention to?

The official exam will follow the same structure and format as the sample exam that the Hanoi Department of Education and Training announced at the beginning of the school year. The exam content will mainly be based on the 9th grade curriculum, ensuring that it is not "puzzling" and does not fall outside the curriculum that students have learned in middle school.

Before the exam, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training requested schools to organize for students to study the regulations. Students need to understand the regulations to avoid violating the rules. In particular, they need to arrive at the exam location on time, not bring phones, technological devices as well as prohibited items into the exam room.

Mr. Tran The Cuong, Director of Hanoi Department of Education and Training.

The Department of Education and Training has requested that officials and teachers take the exam seriously but still have a gentle and friendly attitude, creating a comfortable atmosphere for candidates to do the test with the best results.

In the 2025-2026 school year, Hanoi has implemented many innovations in 10th grade admissions to reduce pressure on students while ensuring fairness and transparency.

Candidates should note that these items are prohibited from being brought into the examination room. If you bring prohibited devices, you will be dealt with according to the regulations.

One of the notable new points is the adjustment of the way to calculate the admission score for grade 10. If previously, the scores of Math and Literature were multiplied by a factor of 2, this year this calculation method has been removed, and instead the scores of the 3 subjects are added together. The maximum total admission score is 30 points. This calculation method aims to ensure fairness between subjects and encourage students to study all subjects equally.

In addition, to reduce pressure on students, the City has built new and repaired more schools, increasing the enrollment rate in public schools to more than 64%, equivalent to recruiting about 80,000 students.

Immediately after the exam ends, the examination board will immediately get to work to ensure the announcement of exam results and benchmark scores within the expected time.

What is Hanoi's plan for organizing the exam, especially in harsh weather conditions?

The Hanoi Department of Education and Training has mobilized more than 17,000 officials and teachers to participate in organizing and marking exams, and nearly 600 officials to perform exam inspection duties. The whole city has arranged 210 exam sites with more than 4,500 exam rooms. The selected exam sites have all been inspected and reviewed for exam rooms, power lines, fire prevention and fighting systems, trees, fans, etc. to ensure facilities, security, safety and convenience for students.

In hot weather conditions, all testing locations have backup generators and plans to deal with situations such as power outages and heavy rain causing flooding.

"During the exams, the images of teachers and young volunteers holding umbrellas and giving out shirts to candidates when they got wet in the rain moved many people. This year, the work of supporting candidates continued to be carefully implemented by the exam sites," said Mr. Tran The Cuong.

Medical work is taken seriously. At each examination site, there are school medical staff and local medical staff on duty to promptly support students and exam invigilators if necessary.

In the outer round, there are also youth volunteers and security forces whose task is to support candidates in situations where help is needed; ensure security and traffic flow so that candidates can reach the exam site safely.

Schools and testing sites are also required to review cases of candidates with especially difficult circumstances or health problems to have support plans.

Specifically, at some examination sites, we have arranged separate examination rooms with doctors on duty and medical equipment to support candidates when necessary. For example, if a candidate broke his arm and could not take the exam, the Examination Steering Committee allowed the school to send students with lower qualifications, such as 7th and 8th graders, to help the candidate copy the exam papers. All equipment related to the candidate's health brought into the examination room is inspected by the police force, ensuring both the student's right to take the exam and the correct implementation of the examination regulations.

The Hanoi Department of Education and Training has also set up online support channels and hotlines to answer questions from parents and students.

No pressure on students

What solutions does Hanoi have to increase the enrollment quota for grade 10 public high schools? What options do unsuccessful candidates have next school year, sir?

We understand that the pressure to get into public schools in Hanoi is huge. Last year, the rate of entering grade 10 in public high schools was 61%.

This year, with the city's efforts, the enrollment target has been increased to 5,000 students, equivalent to an increase of 3%. Hanoi is also rushing to build a number of new high schools, of which 3 will be put into operation in the next school year. The Hanoi Department of Education and Training will supplement the target and have a suitable enrollment plan.

In addition, in the city today there are many types of schools, ensuring to meet the learning needs of students after graduating from junior high school, including: private school systems, vocationaleducation - continuing education centers, vocational schools... Parents and candidates can learn about educational models for their children to study.

I would like to send a message to parents that the 10th grade entrance exam to public high schools is an important milestone, but it is not the only way to study. Therefore, parents need to create a comfortable atmosphere, without causing pressure or stress for their children. The Department of Education and Training will accompany and support all students who wish to take the exam, creating learning conditions for them in many suitable forms, absolutely leaving no one behind.
