Da Nang responds to saltwater intrusion
Mr. Pham Van Chien, Deputy Director of the Central Central Hydrometeorological Station, said that prolonged heat will increase the risk of drought and saltwater intrusion. Although not as severe as last year, areas beyond water supply capacity may still experience local drought, affecting production and daily life in the downstream of the Vu Gia - Thu Bon River.
To cope with drought and ensure water security, Da Nang City has issued a plan, requiring units to strengthen monitoring of water resource exploitation, monitor water levels, water flow and handle violations in reservoir operations. When the salinity at Cau Do water plant exceeds 1,000 mg/liter for 24 consecutive hours, the city will adjust the water discharge from A Vuong, Song Bung 4 - 4A - 5 - 6, Dak Mi 4, Song Con 2 level 1 reservoirs and An Trach dam to the downstream of Vu Gia river until the salinity drops below 700 mg/liter for 12 hours.
The city also proposed that Quang Nam province agree on the policy of building a temporary dam on the Quang Hue River to prevent salinity when necessary. In an emergency, Da Nang will build a temporary dam on the Cam Le River. The two localities have established an operational plan for the Coordination Board for Water Resources Management and Environmental Protection of the Vu Gia - Thu Bon Basin in 2025, aiming to propose solutions to the Central Government to regulate water resources when there are unusual developments.
Mr. Nguyen Hong An, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Da Nang City said: After merging the two localities, we will promote dam construction, adjust the Quang Hue River, upgrade the An Trach - Thanh Quyt - Bau Nit - Ha Thanh irrigation system, coordinate with hydropower plants to regulate water reasonably and reinforce the canal system to supply water to the downstream.

Quang Ngai ensures summer-autumn crop production
In Quang Ngai, the 2025 Summer-Autumn rice crop will start on May 25 and will be completed by June 10. Farmers are currently preparing the land for sowing.
The summer-autumn crop often faces difficulties due to prolonged heat, which can easily lead to water shortages in the downstream areas. However, this year, the province has abundant water, with 24 reservoirs managed by the Irrigation Works Exploitation Company all reaching a useful capacity of over 77%. The province plans to cultivate about 60,700 hectares, including more than 35,000 hectares of rice and more than 25,000 hectares of vegetables and other annual crops. The summer is forecast to have many heat waves, with temperatures reaching up to 41°C.
Water levels in small reservoirs and dams may decrease rapidly if the heat wave persists. The risk of water shortages and saltwater intrusion at the end of the season still exists in irrigation areas at the end of canals and in areas with small-scale projects.
The People's Committee of Quang Ngai province has directed the Department of Agriculture and Environment and localities to synchronously deploy measures to ensure production in the Summer-Autumn crop. These include fully preparing production conditions in arid areas, effectively operating irrigation works, developing drought prevention plans, saving water resources, launching campaigns to eradicate rats and golden apple snails, and converting crop structures appropriately.
The Department of Agriculture and Environment organized training courses on cultivation techniques, weather monitoring, and pests, while strengthening inspections of seed, fertilizer, and pesticide production facilities. The management of growing area codes, packaging facilities, and disease prevention on key crops such as cassava and acacia continued to be promoted.
"The agricultural sector has directed people to comply with the crop calendar and variety structure, focusing on plowing, soaking, and killing rats right from the beginning of the crop. The Irrigation Works Exploitation Company and localities are coordinating to regulate water appropriately for this Summer-Autumn crop," said Nguyen Quang Trung, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Ngai province.
