Teachers in Switzerland have expressed concern that too many students wear diapers to class because they do not know how to use the toilet.
“When you have a class of four-year-olds, it’s acceptable that some children are still wearing diapers,” Dagmar Rösler, head of the Swiss Teachers’ Union, told Swiss newspaper 20 Minuten. “But when you have 11-year-olds still wearing diapers, it’s a worrying trend.”
According to experts, many children become so used to wearing diapers that they find it difficult to transition to more proper toilet training, such as going to the toilet.
Health experts recommend that the average age for potty training is between 18 and 24 months. However, it seems that in Switzerland, many parents skip this process because diapers are a convenient solution.Education scientist Margrit Stamm warns that this is a completely wrong view.
Child development expert Rita Messmer revealed that the number of children wearing diapers to school is “increasing dramatically.” She shared that she had a patient who was 11 years old and had not been taught how to use the toilet.
The lack of toilet skills has become a burden for many teachers, who have to help students change diapers. “Parents are responsible for making sure their school-age children are out of diapers. Teachers are not there to change their children. This is crossing the line,” Mr. Rösler stressed.
While the problem is giving educators in Switzerland a headache, in New York (USA), many schools have also recorded cases of parents not teaching their children how to use the toilet.
“Teachers here say they are not responsible for changing diapers. There are no policies or procedures in place for working with children, teaching them to sit on the toilet, or cleaning up after a child has an accident. If they do that, they lose an entire teaching hour,” Phil Rumore, president of the Buffalo Federation of Teachers, said in 2019.
According to the Buffalo Teachers Union, 43 students came to school not knowing how to use the bathroom properly, leading to teasing from classmates.
“I don’t blame the parents, because in some cases, there are children with autism, or emotional or physical problems. Some children have medical conditions that have limited options for defecation and this forces them to use diapers instead,” Mr. Rumore explained.
According to experts from Parent.com, families need to look for signs that their child is ready to use the toilet, including facial expressions and teaching the child to express the need to use the toilet.
