Preserving Vietnamese language and culture for overseas Vietnamese children in Japan

On June 3, at the headquarters of the Consulate General of Vietnam in Fukuoka, Japan, the Consulate General (TLSQ) in coordination with the Vietnamese Association in Fukuoka successfully organized the Workshop "The importance of teaching Vietnamese language and culture to Vietnamese children in Kyushu, Japan", with more than 120 delegates attending in person and online.

According to VNA correspondent in Japan, attending the workshop at the Vietnam bridge were Mr. Mai Phan Dung, Deputy Head of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese (NNVNVNONN); Mr. Dinh Hoang Linh, Director of the Department of Information and Culture, Committee for Overseas Vietnamese; Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Lan Trung, Chairman of the Vietnam Linguistics Association, Vice Chairman and General Secretary of the Association for Liaison with Overseas Vietnamese; Ms. Le Hoai Thu, Deputy Director in charge of the Center forEducational Technology - Vietnam Education Publishing House.

The Japanese side chaired the workshop with Ms. Vu Chi Mai, Consul General of Vietnam in Fukuoka; Mr. Nguyen Duy Anh, Chairman of the Vietnamese Association in Fukuoka; Associate Professors, Doctors, Vietnamese language research and teaching experts from Vietnam and Japan, along with representatives of Vietnamese associations and delegations in Japan, representatives of overseas Vietnamese participating in training Vietnamese language teachers, and representatives of overseas Vietnamese whose children are attending Vietnamese language classes.

In her opening speech, Ms. Vu Chi Mai, Consul General of Vietnam in Fukuoka, affirmed that this is an important activity to kick off a series of events of the TLSQ to implement the Project "Day to Honor Vietnamese Language in the Overseas Vietnamese Community for the period 2023 - 2030" approved by the Prime Minister with practical activities such as participating in the Contest "Searching for Vietnamese Ambassadors Abroad"; activities to honor individuals and organizations that have made positive contributions to the movement to preserve and spread the Vietnamese language; building a Vietnamese bookshelf...; this is also one of the key tasks of the TLSQ to build the image of the Overseas Vietnamese Community and preserve and promote the image and culture of Vietnam. Teaching Vietnamese language and culture to second and third generation Vietnamese children will bring many obvious benefits, including enhancing national pride, identity and awareness as well as social understanding, building close family relationships. Encouraging the use of Vietnamese in second and third generation families helps build strong, developing communities and creates important human resources for Vietnam and Japan.

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Mai Phan Dung, Vice Chairman of the Committee for Overseas Vietnamese, affirmed that the Vietnamese community in Japan as well as the Vietnamese community around the world always demonstrate their responsibility to the young generation, have many initiatives to organize practical activities to consolidate and develop movements to propagate and maintain the Vietnamese language; build and develop Vietnamese schools, classes, centers... such as: Vietnamese Language School in Tokyo, Vietnamese Language School in Osaka, Saitama Vietnamese, Hoa Mai Class in Kobe... have promoted many types of Vietnamese teaching and learning, creating a favorable environment for preserving and creating a cultural space - Vietnamese language. Along with the exciting and lively activities in Vietnamese language work mentioned above, the conference has created an important highlight in the activities responding to the Vietnamese Language Honor Day in the Overseas Vietnamese Community to affirm the role of Vietnamese language in community life. Mr. Mai Phan Dung, especially praised the initiative to organize a course on teaching Vietnamese language and culture for Vietnamese children in Kyushu, Japan; affirmed that this is a priceless gift for Vietnamese children far from the Fatherland who are still being nurtured in the care of traditional Vietnamese culture and language and hoped that such meaningful initiatives would continue to be replicated not only in Northeast Asia, but also around the world.

The workshop heard experts and speakers present many issues such as: Dr. Kondo Mika, Vietnamese major - Faculty of Foreign Languages ​​- Osaka University, discussed "Preserving language and culture for children of Vietnamese origin, especially how to ensure opportunities to learn Vietnamese and Vietnamese culture in school education in Japan"; Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Anh Thi, Osaka University, on "Sharing about the classroom model for 2 groups of people who are not fluent in Vietnamese as their mother tongue and are fluent in Vietnamese as their mother tongue"; Master Hua Ngoc Tan, Dai Nam University, shared experiences from Taiwan (China) on "Building and organizing a Vietnamese language and Vietnamese culture teaching program for the above two groups"; Ms. Le Hoai Thu, Deputy Director in charge of the Center for Educational Technology - Vietnam Education Publishing House, shared about "Some new points in the approach to teaching Vietnamese to Vietnamese children abroad in the book series Hello Vietnamese and introducing the program Hello Vietnamese on VTV4"; Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Lan Trung "Guide to Vietnamese teaching curriculum and Vietnamese teaching methods".

The workshop took place in a lively atmosphere, many questions from overseas Vietnamese revolving around the issue of teaching and learning methods of Vietnamese were answered by the leader of the NNVVNNONN Committee, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Lan Trung and experts and speakers.

Within the framework of the workshop, the Vietnamese Association in Fukuoka officially launched the "Vietnamese Language Committee" to honor and preserve the Vietnamese language and culture, develop and implement Vietnamese teaching methods for parents in parallel with the Vietnamese teaching and learning program for children and the second and third generations.
