Passengers disembark as the Norwegian Epic docks in the Italian port of Catania, according to a cruise line spokesman.
"On-duty crew members promptly assisted in removing the passenger from the water, and medical personnel arrived to assess the passenger. The injury was minor and he was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment," Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement to People magazine.
At the time, winds in the area were gusting up to 72km/h, according to data from AccuWeather.
After the passenger fell into the water, the ship stopped all operations to let passengers disembark, and waited until the weather stabilized before continuing to dock, according to the spokesperson.
Cruise ship incidents are common, especially during the summer when families eagerly seek trips while their children are on vacation.
Last April, a Norwegian Cruise Line ship left an 80-year-old passenger behind in Africa after she suffered a stroke during a cruise. In May, another elderly couple were left behind in Spain when the ship sailed without them.
In July, a family of nine was accidentally left behind in Alaska after the crew incorrectly counted the number of passengers returning to the ship before departure.
