Medical news update January 28th: Keep patients and their families warm during the Lunar New Year holidays.

During the Lunar New Year holiday, when temperatures drop sharply, hospitals have intensified measures to ensure that patients and their families receiving treatment and staying at the hospital are kept warm.

Keep patients and their families warm during the Lunar New Year holidays.

"During the Lunar New Year holiday, temperatures drop sharply, and the weather turns intensely cold. Units must strengthen measures to ensure that patients and their families receiving treatment and staying at the hospital are kept warm," that was the directive of Associate Professor Dr. Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital, regarding the work of keeping patients warm during the cold weather.

Hospitals have stepped up measures to ensure that patients and their families are kept warm.

Accordingly, Bach Mai Hospital has equipped itself with outdoor heating lamps, warm blankets, and boiling water to provide additional support in combating the cold for patients and their families.

Mr. Vu Hoai Nam, head of the Administrative Department, said that preparations for serving patients and their families had been made well in advance, with full equipment and supplies. The hospital has also assigned medical staff to be on duty, ready to respond anytime, anywhere.

On the evening of January 26th, the 27th day of the Lunar New Year, temperatures dropped sharply. The heating system along the A9 Emergency Center and Stroke Center was switched on, protecting patients' family members waiting outside from the cold. This system will be maintained throughout the Lunar New Year holiday, until the outside temperature rises.

Dr. Truong Anh Thu, Head of the Infection Control Department, said that ensuring patients always have warm blankets, clean clothes, and boiled water is a routine task of the Department.

However, in anticipation of the freezing weather during the 2025 Lunar New Year, all operations have been intensified. The department is ready to promptly and fully meet any needs of the wards, patients, and their families. Almost 100% of the department's staff are on duty throughout the holiday. Furthermore, the department has personnel on duty 24/7 to provide warming supplies, as well as equipment and linens.

Besides strengthening measures to protect patients and their families from the cold during the Tet holiday, Bach Mai Hospital's Social Work Department also set up a "zero-cost" stall and Tet meal program to distribute free necessities and food to people staying at the hospital. This activity was implemented from the 28th of the lunar month to the 5th day of Tet, i.e., from January 27th to February 2nd.

In recent days, many hospitals in Hanoi have added two-way air conditioners, heaters, and warm blankets to serve patients. In addition, hospitals have assigned more doctors to work in the examination areas in the mornings to minimize waiting times for patients. Patients are also being arranged in rooms with two-way air conditioning according to priority based on their health condition and illness.

For rooms without dual-mode air conditioning, the hospital has also provided extra blankets and heaters to help keep patients warm. Medical facilities have also stocked up on emergency medications and prepared the necessary equipment to promptly handle common emergencies during the cold season.

At the National Geriatric Hospital, a leading specialized hospital for treating the elderly, preparations for protection against the cold began at the start of the cold season. Areas for queuing for reception, examinations, ultrasounds, and tests are all well-insulated against drafts.

The Ministry of Health advises that during cold weather, people, especially the elderly and children, should limit going outside when it is too cold and windy, particularly between 9 PM and 6 AM. When going out, they should wear warm clothing to protect against drafts, such as thick coats and long pants, scarves, hats, gloves, socks, and face masks. They should also keep their bodies dry, avoiding dampness, especially around the neck, hands, and feet, both when going out and while sleeping, to reduce the risk of colds.

In addition, it is necessary to avoid exposure to cigarette smoke and charcoal smoke, and to refrain from drinking alcohol, especially for people in mountainous areas, as alcohol constricts blood vessels, causing high blood pressure, which can lead to stroke and death. It is also necessary to avoid drinks containing stimulants such as caffeine. Avoid bathing late at night after 10 PM, bathing for too long, or bathing in unventilated areas as this can easily lead to heat shock, which is life-threatening. Use warm water for bathing and personal hygiene.

In addition, it is necessary to maintain good oral and throat hygiene daily, such as brushing your teeth regularly before and after waking up, and rinsing your mouth with warm water mixed with diluted salt to disinfect the throat and reduce sore throat inflammation. Wash your hands frequently with soap to remove bacteria and get vaccinated to prevent influenza.

In addition, it is necessary to eat a balanced diet to provide the body with energy to withstand the cold. Daily meals should include all four basic food groups (carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals). For those engaged in heavy labor, the elderly, and children, higher amounts of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and vitamins are needed compared to other seasons to increase body heat and protect against the cold, especially supplementing with vitamins A and C to boost immunity.

In addition, avoid consuming cold foods and drinks, especially those just taken from the refrigerator, as this can easily cause the body to become chilled. People with high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, etc., need to adhere to medication regimens and appropriate exercise and nutrition plans as directed by their doctors.

Regular physical exercise and sports will help warm the body, boost immunity, and improve resistance to cold weather conditions. At the same time, it's important to regularly update yourself on weather information through the media.

Many cases of examination and emergency treatment are due to food poisoning and digestive disorders.

According to a quick report on healthcare during the Lunar New Year holiday of 2025 from the Ministry of Health, as of the morning of January 26th, nearly 147,000 patients nationwide were still receiving treatment. In addition, nearly 7,000 cases of suspected traffic-related accidents were examined and treated.

During the first two days of the Lunar New Year holiday (January 25th and 26th), there were 165 cases of food poisoning and digestive disorders requiring examination and emergency treatment; however, no deaths were recorded.

To prevent food poisoning during the Lunar New Year holiday, the Ministry of Health has directed relevant units to strengthen communication efforts regarding food safety for producers, businesses, and consumers.

At the same time, the Ministry also mobilizes community participation in preventing and combating the production and sale of counterfeit and substandard food, as well as food poisoning, and provides timely warnings about food safety risks.

In addition, the Ministry of Health has requested relevant agencies to strengthen inter-agency inspections on food safety, focusing on controlling production and import points, wholesale markets, shopping centers, supermarkets, slaughterhouses, and food transportation.

The ministry also requested strict control over smuggling, trade fraud, counterfeit goods, substandard goods, expired goods, and goods of unknown origin.

According to a report from the Ministry of Health, after two days of the Lunar New Year holiday, there were 42 cases of examination and emergency treatment due to firecracker explosions of all kinds and 10 cases of emergency treatment due to accidents caused by homemade weapons and explosives, but no fatalities were recorded.

Regarding the disease situation, from January 25th to 26th, the whole country recorded 158 cases of dengue fever, 43 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease, and 511 cases of measles-like rash, including one case testing positive for measles in Hanoi. The Ministry of Health also emphasized that during the first few days of the Lunar New Year holiday, no outbreaks or clusters of dangerous infectious diseases spreading in the community were recorded.

To enhance healthcare services during the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday, the Ministry of Health directs agencies and units to assign unit leaders, officials, and staff to be on duty 24/7, ensuring scientific and effective work; and to publicly post the daily duty roster as prescribed.

The Ministry of Health reminds localities, agencies, and units to absolutely not be complacent, negligent, or lose vigilance in the face of the epidemic. At the same time, they need to organize forces and resources for emergency response, monitoring and supervising the development of the epidemic, ensuring security and order, and fire safety; and promptly and effectively handle and resolve any arising situations.

Establishing a proper nutritional plan for children during Tet (Lunar New Year)

To ensure children receive adequate nutrition during Tet (Lunar New Year), neither too little nor too much, parents need to establish a balanced diet and maintain a regular daily routine to minimize disruption.

Therefore, for young children, it is necessary to maintain a regular eating schedule and meals to ensure the digestive system functions properly.

Families should feed children small portions, avoiding overeating at once, especially foods high in protein or fat. Prioritize easily digestible foods such as porridge, soup, vegetable broth, chicken, and steamed fish; supplement with fruits rich in vitamin C (oranges, grapefruits) or bananas to aid digestion.

Parents should limit their children's intake of unsuitable foods such as fried and greasy foods that easily cause bloating and indigestion; sweets and sugary drinks with high sugar content increase the risk of digestive disorders and gas. Fermented and pickled foods (pickled vegetables, kimchi) can easily irritate the stomach. In particular, do not give children new foods they have never tried before, as this may cause allergies or indigestion.

It is important to choose fresh and clean food, and limit processed foods or foods that have been stored for a long time. Meals must be cooked thoroughly and reheated before serving; absolutely do not give children food that has been left overnight to avoid the risk of bacterial infection.

Encourage children to drink plenty of fluids, such as water or unsweetened fresh fruit juice, to aid digestion; avoid sugary or carbonated drinks as they can easily cause bloating.

Instead of giving children lots of sweets, parents can prepare healthy snacks such as yogurt, cheese, nuts like almonds and cashews (unsalted and unsweetened), and fresh fruits (apples, pears, watermelon).

After meals, gentle exercise helps children aid digestion and prevents them from lying down immediately after eating.

If your child shows signs of bloating, indigestion, nausea, diarrhea, or abdominal pain, parents should give them warm water to drink. Massage the abdomen in a clockwise direction to relieve bloating.

Monitor the child's condition and take them to the doctor if symptoms do not improve. Families should also have basic medications on hand, such as probiotics, fever reducers, or oral rehydration solution (ORS) packets, in case the child experiences digestive problems.
