Having made an appointment in advance, we went to It Ong town, Muong La district to meet Meritorious Artist Cam Vui. We were welcomed in a house that looked like a miniature library, with many certificates of merit, songs that he had painstakingly composed. Along with many books in ancient Thai script that he had researched, collected, translated, and recorded customs and practices...
Born into a family with a mother who knew Thai singing and a father who was a teacher of ancient Thai script in the Muong Trai river region, Cam Vui showed his artistic talent from a young age. In 1979, he applied to work at the District Cultural Office and was sent to study at the Hung Yen Provincial School of Culture and Arts to improve his qualifications. After graduating, he was assigned to be the leader of the propaganda team, building a cultural and artistic movement at the grassroots level.
Mr. Vui shared: Learning to sing Thai songs, play the flute, or play the two-stringed fiddle is not difficult, but it requires passion and perseverance. Like all Thai, you must know how to breathe and pause. Therefore, the performer needs to have passion, along with a good voice, and the ability to sing along to the melody of each genre and the content the song wants to convey.
Stemming from his passion for Thai people, he began to compose songs and poems of his ethnic group. To date, he has composed 300 songs and poems published in 3 books: “ Son La hung huong lao don” (Son La, the land of bright stars) with content praising the Party, Uncle Ho, and the renewed homeland of Son La; “Nghia suong can” (Love and affection), including songs of dialogue, love affairs, and old people visiting each other; and the book “Song khuoi ton pau”, reflecting the customs and practices in weddings of the Thai ethnic group.
Mr. Vui's works are welcomed by Thai people near and far as indispensable spiritual food. In recognition of his contributions and dedication, in 2015, Mr. Cam Vui was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist in the folk performing arts and traditional festivals of Son La provinceby the President .
Affectionately nicknamed “Nightingale” of Moc Chau plateau, Meritorious Artist Giang Khanh Ly was born in Long Luong commune, Van Ho district, where Mong people have lived for a long time. Participating in the mass art movement since she was young, she has won many high prizes at competitions, performances, and mass art festivals inside and outside the province, such as: Gold Medal at the first Lullaby Festival of Vietnamese Ethnic Groups (1992); Silver Medal at the first National Radio Festival of Folk Songs of Ethnic Groups (1998); Silver Medal at the Provincial Mass Art Performance (2001) and many first prizes for best singing of Moc Chau town.
Meritorious artist Giang Khanh Ly, pondered: I find Mong folk songs very attractive, very special, while society is increasingly developing, making the young generation not have much time to learn traditional folk songs of the nation. This urges me to want to learn more and teach them to my children and grandchildren so that the younger generation will love and feel responsible for preserving the national culture.
Therefore, Ms. Khanh Ly has researched and composed new songs based on traditional folk songs to suit the reality. Up to now, she has researched, collected and performed 100 Mong folk songs; composed over 40 songs in Mong folk melodies. She has also taught nearly 100 people who are descendants and lovers of Mong folk songs. In 2019, she was honored to receive the title of Meritorious Artist of Folk Performing Arts from the President.
In the constant flow of time, amidst the changes of life, excellent artists such as Mr. Cam Vui, Ms. Giang Khanh Ly and many active members of the Provincial Literature and Arts Association always promote the spirit of solidarity, actively create literature and art, serving the political tasks of the province and the cultural and artistic life of the ethnic people.
In the past 5 years, many authors in the fields of literature and art have won more than 100 awards at the Central, Northwest - Viet Bac region and the province. In addition, 19 books by 12 authors have been published, collecting and researching folk literature; essays, research, criticism; fine arts - photography.
Each work created by artists not only records the breath of life, but also guides, inspires, and contributes to beautifying the picture of Son La homeland - a land rich in revolutionary traditions and full of potential for cultural and tourism development.
