Professional management and operation
Nui Coc Lake is over 2,500 hectares wide, containing over 175 million m3 of water, with hundreds of large and small islands, surrounded by green mountains and forests, a fresh environment, cool climate, and unpolluted lake water, so traveling on the lake by boat or ship brings unforgettable experiences to visitors. Contributing to making trips on Nui Coc Lake safe is the buoy system, signal lights, and signs.
Previously, the buoy system, night signal lights, and waterway signs on Nui Coc Lake were degraded and seriously damaged. Many devices lost their ability to guide routes, posing a risk to the safety of ships and boats carrying tourists because many islands were submerged and low right on the water surface. The main reason was unprofessional management and maintenance, many shortcomings, and non-compliance with technical standards.
To overcome this problem, from 2025, Thai Nguyen province decided to assign the Thai Nguyen Department of Construction, directly the Thai Nguyen Traffic Construction Maintenance and Consulting Management Board to manage the buoy system, signal lights, and signs of the inland waterway route of Nui Coc Lake.

"Awakening" the tourism potential of Nui Coc Lake
Director of Thai Nguyen Traffic Construction Maintenance and Consulting Management Board Nguyen Dinh Vu said: Immediately after performing the assigned task, from April 2025, we coordinated with Regional Waterway Joint Stock Company II, a professional unit in managing and operating waterways and waterways, to salvage, maintain, repair, and repaint all 82 buoys, 56 signs, and 100 solar-powered night-time signaling lights.
According to Mr. Tran Duc Quan, Director of Regional Waterway Joint Stock Company II, on the surface of Nui Coc Lake there are many submerged islands and low-lying islands above the water surface. If the navigation system does not work or is misplaced, the risk of unsafety for ships and boats is very high.
The water level of Nui Coc Lake rises and falls every day, and strong winds cause the buoy system to move and shift frequently, so the unit assigned to manage and operate it must arrange means and human resources to adjust the buoy position according to buoy regulations to signal the waterway for ships and boats to pass safely.
Shortcomings that need to be overcome
Although the management and operation of the inland waterway of Nui Coc Lake has become professional, the buoy system, lights, and signs have been maintained, repaired, and repainted, but it is only a temporary situation, because it has now expired from 3 to 8 years and is seriously degraded. In particular, the solar lighting system is inefficient, the light is weak, making it dangerous to determine the steering direction of ships and boats at night.
All buoys, signs, and lights on the lake are many years past their useful life, so they need to be replaced, supplemented, and a new signaling system invested in to meet waterway traffic safety standards. However, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Vu said that the biggest difficulty is the lack of funding to invest in replacing buoys, especially signal lights, which makes it unsafe to operate ships and boats at night or in bad weather conditions when they crash into submerged islands or low-lying islands on the water surface.
Thai Nguyen province is promoting investment in tourism facilities, connecting traffic infrastructure, strongly innovating service style and quality to exploit and attract tourists to Nui Coc Lake. Investment in the signaling system on the waterway here needs attention, not only to help ensure safety but also to contribute to increasing the attractiveness and effectively exploiting waterway tourism in this famous landscape.
