On April 29, Hai Duong Museum held a conference to assess the preliminary results of the archaeological survey of Thanh Den relic in Ngoc Lac village, Ngoc Son commune, Hai Duong city from March 26, 2025 to April 26, 2025.

Previously, in December 2024, during the cultivation process, people of Ngoc Lac village uncovered many ancient bricks, tiles, and ceramics in Thanh Den area. Hai Duong Provincial Museum received the information and sent staff to survey.

The Thanh Den archaeological site is located on the rice field of Mrs. Dao Thi Nhung in Ngoc Lac village.

On February 11, 2025, the research team including representatives from the Institute of Archaeology, the Provincial Museum, the Department of Culture, Science and Information, the People's Committee of Ngoc Son commune and representatives of Ngoc Lac village authorities conducted a survey of the relic.

The survey discovered many artifacts, mainly dating back about 1,700-1,800 years, along with some artifacts from the Later Le and Nguyen dynasties.

The archaeological exploration site discovered two cultural layers of the Eastern Han and Dong Son periods.

To clarify the value of this relic, Hai Duong province has requested the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to allow archaeological exploration and has been approved by the Ministry.

According to the preliminary report and comments of scientists and delegates attending the Conference, although the excavation area is limited ( 20m2 ), the excavation has achieved good results and also opened up many research directions in the future.

Within a very small excavation area, thousands of relics from the Eastern Han Dynasty and many relics from the Dong Son Dynasty were discovered. Of these, 2,670 were from the Eastern Han Dynasty (2,119 architectural materials; 201 iron nails; 550 household ceramics); 199 were from the Dong Son Dynasty (163 ceramics, 4 stone tools, 32 bronze metallurgical items).

Scientists and cultural officials of Hai Duong province discussed and evaluated the results of exploration and excavation of Thanh Den relic.

The artifacts are concentrated with many diverse types such as: tiles, hard pottery with printed patterns, glazed pottery in the Eastern Han style and Dong Son coarse pottery. This shows the inheritance and continuous development process from the Dong Son period to the Eastern Han period in this area.

In particular, the discovery of a dense group of artifacts in the Eastern Han style (architectural artifacts) has confirmed that Thanh Den was a densely populated residential center with a certain position during the Eastern Han period.

The collected artifacts will supplement valuable resources for displaying, introducing and promoting the heritage value of the land to the masses, domestic and foreign tourists of Hai Duong Provincial Museum.
