On the morning of November 16, the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Management and Exploitation of Irrigation Works announced that the two reservoirs of Song Hoa and Song Ray will discharge floodwater for 10 consecutive days to ensure the safety of the works in the face of prolonged heavy rain.
The expected operating time starts from 8:00 on November 16 and lasts until 8:00 on November 26.
Previously, the water level in both lakes had risen rapidly. Records on November 13 showed that Song Hoa Lake reached an elevation of 24.85 m, while Song Ray Lake rose to 72.82 m, although the lake was still in the second flood discharge phase.
The high water pressure makes continued discharge a mandatory requirement to reduce the load on the dam body and ensure safety for downstream areas.
The opening of the spillway is expected to significantly impact the lives and production of people along the two rivers flowing through the communes of Xuyen Moc, Ho Tram, Xuan Son, Hoa Hoi, Bau Lam, Dat Do and Phuoc Hai.
Local authorities recommend that people temporarily suspend fishing activities and limit access to riverside areas to avoid danger due to strong currents and sudden water level rises.
People are also advised to proactively protect their property and production areas during flood discharge.
As a locality directly affected by the flow of both lakes, Ho Tram commune has requested functional units to increase warnings for people living near the river and low-lying areas. At the same time, forces in the commune are urgently overcoming the flooding situation of the previous days and supporting affected households to soon stabilize their lives.
