Hamas responds to the US, Russia speaks fair words for Palestine

The United States has received a formal response from Hamas to Qatar and Egypt regarding its latest ceasefire proposal in the Gaza Strip and is evaluating it.

Reuters news agency quoted a joint statement on June 11 from Egypt and Qatar affirming that the two countries have received responses from Hamas and Palestinian factions about the US proposal regarding a ceasefire agreement with Israel and the exchange of hostages and detainees.

The mediators will review the responses and coordinate with relevant parties on next steps, the statement added.

Meanwhile, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the US administration is “assessing” Hamas’ official response to the new ceasefire proposal, but declined to provide details about the movement’s response.

Earlier on June 11, Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) movement said their response prioritized the interests of the Palestinian people and emphasized the need to completely end Israel's ongoing actions in Gaza.

Palestinian movements expressed their readiness to actively participate in the negotiation process, aiming to reach an agreement to end the conflict, stemming from a sense of national responsibility.

Al Jazeera TV channel quoted a close source saying that this response also included amendments related to the ceasefire agreement proposal.

Previously, on June 10, with 14 votes in favor and one abstention from Russia, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution proposed by Washington, supporting the ceasefire plan proposed by US President Joe Biden.

Also related to the Gaza situation, speaking at a press conference after the BRICS Foreign Ministers ' Meeting in Moscow on June 11, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the West is trying to find a way to resolve the conflict without the participation of the Palestinians themselves.

"By ignoring the Palestinians, they have begun to calculate what to do next with Gaza. Either establish a kind of Arab protectorate there, or introduce some peacekeeping forces, or declare that it will be a territory governed by the Palestinian national authority," Lavrov was quoted as saying by the MNA news agency.

However, according to the diplomat , all these initiatives "are imposed from outside", while Palestinian factions have always expressed their readiness to unite the ranks of the country's people on the basis of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

The Russian Foreign Minister also called on Palestinians to unite, including to achieve their legal rights at the United Nations.
