Every day, Chuyen worked in the fields and raised pigs; while Duc continued his work as a construction worker in the countryside. Although life was hard-working and busy, it still faced many difficulties. They had another son when their eldest daughter was in first grade.
A big incident happened when Duc had an accident at work, had to go in and out of the hospital many times, and since then could not do heavy work. Chuyen shouldered all the worries alone. Although she loved her husband and children, food and clothing were still the constant worries in the heart of the young wife and mother.
Finally, Chuyen decided to go down a tearful path of working abroad in Taiwan, relying on her in-laws to help her children. On the day of parting, the whole family hugged each other and cried like rain. Witnessing that scene, I silently realized that happiness is being together.
However, to be happy, Chuyen understands that each person must know how to sacrifice for each other. With a husband who is often sick and two growing children (a daughter in 10th grade, a son in 5th grade), despite the deep longing in her heart, Chuyen still decided to go far away.
More than three years have passed, wandering alone in a foreign land, Chuyen worked hard to have some extra money and hoped to return home soon. In Taiwan, the work was hard, waking up early and returning late, but it was nothing compared to the longing and worry for her husband and children. Looking at the family photos Chuyen posted on Facebook, I was moved to tears.
After many years away from home, Chuyen had to swallow her tears and work hard to send money home to support her two children's education and her husband's medical treatment. When her eldest daughter took her graduation exam, her mother far away from home could only call to advise her and wish her good luck on the exam.
I (a relative of Chuyen's husband's family) understand her simple yet decisive personality. Chuyen confided honestly: "Staying at home with a few fields of rice is not enough to eat, so how can we raise our children to study? Over here, every time I hear my children call and say they miss their mother, I almost cry. I miss home and my children so much that I can't sleep at night. But what can I do? I have to work hard and save up for my two children to go to university. If my children have a decent future, then I, as a father and mother, will be at ease and happy, my dear." Many people praise Chuyen for being hard-working and strong-willed.
For poor working women like Chuyen, happiness has a simple yet noble definition: being able to provide for their children's education, seeing them grow up, and knowing how to accept sacrifices for the person they love.
In less than a year, Chuyen will be able to return home to her family. I imagine her husband and two children welcoming her at the airport and am filled with emotion.
With the capital accumulated over many years abroad, Chuyen will know how to calculate to do business right in her homeland, after sending money back to pay off debts and take care of her husband and children. In just a few years, Chuyen's daughter will graduate from university, have a stable job, and support her parents.
The dream of a happy, peaceful and united family will certainly come true with a selfless wife and mother like Chuyen. I believe so!
