The Maui Wildfire Disaster Response Agency has identified only six victims, including the latest case of Donna Gomes, 71, of Lahaina.

Forensic experts who identified victims of the 9/11 attacks are helping identify bodies that were badly disfigured by the fire. Hawaii Attorney General Anne Lopez said an independent agency would be appointed to investigate the disaster preparedness and response.

On August 17, Maui Emergency Management Agency Director Herman Andaya resigned "due to health reasons," following criticism that the alarm system was not activated during the fire.
