The Maui Wildfire Disaster Response Agency has identified only six victims, including the latest case of Donna Gomes (71 years old) in the town of Lahaina.

Forensic experts who identified victims of the September 11 attacks are helping identify bodies severely disfigured by the fire. Hawaii Attorney General Anne Lopez said she would appoint an independent agency to investigate the disaster's preparedness and response.

On August 17, Maui Emergency Management Agency Director Herman Andaya resigned "due to health reasons", following criticism that the alarm system was not activated during the fire.
