"We are starting the process of reforming key state-owned enterprises in the energy sector," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced. "Along with a comprehensive audit of their financial activities, the management boards of these companies will also be replaced."

He placed particular emphasis on reforming Energoatom, the nuclear power company at the centre of the scandal. The Ukrainian leader demanded the immediate creation of a new supervisory board within seven days to facilitate a “comprehensive overhaul of the company’s leadership”.
In addition, President Zelenskyy also directed to speed up the appointment of new leaders for the hydroelectric corporation Ukrhydroenergo and carry out necessary reforms for the oil and gas giant Naftogaz.
“I have also directed government officials to maintain regular and effective communication with law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies,” he added. “Transparency and integrity in the energy sector remain an absolute priority.”
The move follows an announcement by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) that a massive corruption scheme in the energy sector involving $100 million had been uncovered after a 15-month investigation. Five suspects have been arrested and seven others face various charges.
The situation in Ukraine’s energy sector is extremely difficult as its infrastructure has been repeatedly targeted by Russia, putting the country at risk of serious power shortages this winter. Therefore, corruption scandals in the energy sector have further angered public opinion.
Eradicating systemic corruption is considered one of the prerequisites for Ukraine to join the European Union (EU). President Zelenskyy has repeatedly affirmed that the fight against corruption is an urgent task and violators will certainly face consequences.
