Modernizing the irrigation system to serve multiple purposes

On May 28, in Da Nang, the Vietnam Institute of Water Resources organized a workshop on modernizing irrigation systems to serve multiple purposes, adapt to climate change, and solicited comments from experts, scientists, and managers on a set of criteria for evaluating the modernization of irrigation works.

According to the papers and research reports presented at the workshop, the modernization of the irrigation system is urgent and an important driving force to improve the efficiency of water resource use, ensure food security and develop the rural economy . The irrigation system of our country plays an important role in providing irrigation water for production and preventing natural disasters.

However, traditional irrigation works with single purposes need to be converted to serve multiple purposes, combining irrigation, water supply for people's lives, ecotourism and economic sectors; applying science and technology, digital transformation, promoting smart and flexible management, adapting to changes in climate and socio-economic development needs.

At the same time, propose feasible and scientific solutions to upgrade and modernize the works, contributing to improving the capacity to serve agricultural production and economic sectors as well as ensuring water security. The set of criteria for evaluating the modernization of irrigation works is also built to serve more effectively modern agricultural production, adapting to climate change.
