The VAC model (garden - pond - barn) has a diverse ecosystem, a closed integrated agricultural production including cultivation, livestock, and aquaculture. In recent years, many farming households in Thanh Nguyen commune (Thanh Liem) have boldly converted ineffective farming areas to the VAC model, bringing high economic efficiency.
Sharing the same conditions of purely agricultural land, like many other families, in the past, agricultural production of Mr. Luong Van Vuong's family (Mai Cau village) was based only on farming, the income from farming was only enough to cover the family's expenses. With the will and determination to get rich on his homeland, he planned to develop: fruit garden, fish pond, chicken coop. His model initially achieved certain success.
Mr. Vuong's family's model has a fish pond area of more than 3,600m2 for raising carp and grass carp; around it, nearly 6,500m2 of fruit trees and elephant grass are planted; the remaining 1,500m2 is used to build barns to raise more than 2,000 poultry (sugarcane chickens and geese). To take advantage of the source of fertilizer for crops, all waste from livestock farming is treated by Mr. Vuong using a system of tanks mixed with microorganisms to decompose faster, while minimizing the odor. Composted manure will become a source of nutrients for crops, helping the soil become more fertile.
Mr. Vuong shared: “In 2017, after taking over the farm from an acquaintance, I realized that developing the VAC ecological model was the right direction. The advantage of the VAC model is that farmers can make full use of water, food, and waste to bring high economic efficiency. With the support of the local government, I had the opportunity to access preferential loans, and I also borrowed more capital from relatives to renovate and repair barns and farms according to standards”. Thanks to his diligence and willingness to learn, Mr. Vuong has succeeded with his VAC model. Every year, after deducting expenses, the model brings in an income of about 300 million VND.
The VAC model of Mr. Nguyen Hai Hinh, Thuong village, Thanh Nguyen commune, is about 1 hectare wide. In 2015, with 5 sao of his family's rice fields, Mr. Hinh rented more land from surrounding households to renovate the VAC model. He invested in building barns, ponds, and gardens, then found and selected plant and animal varieties suitable for the local climate and soil. The total initial investment cost is estimated at about 1 billion VND. According to Mr. Hinh: The garden provides feed for livestock, while the barn provides fertilizer (poultry waste) for the plants in the garden. The pond provides irrigation water and mud for the plants. In addition, many types of damaged fruits in the garden are used as food sources for fish in the pond, helping to reduce costs and increase production efficiency.
Thanks to participating in training sessions, directly visiting many places to see typical economic development models, accumulating experience from reality... Mr. Hinh's VAC model has brought high economic efficiency. In his garden, he grows vegetables, fruit trees such as jackfruit, guava, custard apple..., in the chicken coop there are always more than 100 chickens, in the pond there are about 500kg of fish of various types such as grass carp, common carp, tilapia... The VAC model brings in an income of about 200 million VND/year.
The closed integrated agricultural production model is currently being replicated and plays an important role in improving economic efficiency for the people of Thanh Nguyen commune. Mr. Pham Quang Vinh, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Thanh Nguyen commune, said: Currently, there are about 7 households participating in the VAC model in the commune with an area of 1 - 2 hectares. The VAC model is a traditional form of farming, close to the local people, bringing clear benefits. In the coming time, the Farmers' Association of the commune will regularly coordinate with specialized departments to organize training on technical application of science and technology, develop multi-crops, multi-animals, produce goods associated with the market, gradually increasing income for the people.
