On the evening of December 8, the Vietnamese women's team suffered a regrettable defeat against the Philippines with a score of 0-1 in the second match of Group B of the 33rd SEA Games women's football.
Coach Mai Duc Chung's team had a balanced match with their opponents throughout the 90 minutes of play. However, the Vietnamese women's team conceded a goal in the 90+4 minute after a messy play.
The defeat against the Philippines put Huynh Nhu and her teammates in a difficult position and forced them to fight Myanmar in the final round.
Speaking after the match, the 74-year-old strategist admitted all responsibility for the defeat: "As head coach, I take full responsibility. However, this match should have ended in a draw."
Mr. Chung also questioned the refereeing of today's match, and said that the referee had many situations that were unfair to Vietnam: "Although the result was clear, the referee had many unreasonable whistle blows, causing frustration for the players and leading to the situation of conceding a goal at the end of the match for the Vietnamese team."
Coach Mai Duc Chung also frankly stated that the Philippines had no strategy other than playing high balls: “They played without any strategy, only knowing how to play high balls and relying on their tall physique. Today’s match should have been a draw.”
"We still have a chance to continue. If we win against Myanmar, the Vietnamese women's team will still continue," he added.
