JJ Gabriel is only 15 years old but is a mainstay of MU U18. |
The 15-year-old scored the only goal as Manchester United U18s beat Peterborough in the third round of the FA Youth Cup. JJ Gabriel also made history by becoming the club's youngest ever goalscorer in the competition.
The goal came in the 22nd minute, when Nathaniel Junior Brown released the ball to the edge of the box and Gabriel placed it with a precise touch into the far corner. The cool finish continued the brilliant form of the October 2009-born boy, who has scored 11 goals in 12 games, including a hat-trick against Liverpool U18s.
Gabriel is only in grade 10 but has attracted the attention of big clubs and brands. He has been a Nike customer since he was 11. It is no surprise that Barcelona are looking to take this rough diamond away from Manchester. Spanish media believe that Barca are confident of luring Gabriel to La Masia.
However, MU soon made a move to keep him. Sporting Director Jason Wilcox convinced him to extend for at least two years. Coach Ruben Amorim even had a private meeting with Gabriel and brought the young player to train with the first team twice.
According to Manchester Evening News , many insiders at MU believe Gabriel could be the most outstanding talent the academy has ever produced.
