"The decision by the Bayer Leverkusen board to fire me was a surprise. Saying goodbye to a coach after only two matches in a tournament is unprecedented," coach Ten Hag spoke about being fired from the "hot seat" by Bayer Leverkusen after only 62 days leading the German team.
The Dutchman's first official game in charge saw him help Bayer Leverkusen to a 4-0 win over fourth-tier SG Sonnenhof Grobaspach in the first round of the German Cup.

However, in the Bundesliga, Leverkusen lost 1-2 to Hoffenheim in their opening match before drawing 3-3 with weaker side Werder Bremen in round 2.
And the club's board of directors suddenly announced the termination of the contract with the 55-year-old coach even though he had a contract until 2027.
"Bayer Leverkusen has parted ways with head coach Erik Ten Hag, effective immediately. Coaching will be handled by the coaching assistant team in the coming time," the club's homepage announced.
However, coach Ten Hag criticized Leverkusen's sudden decision and explained the reason why the team has not had a good start in the Bundesliga.
"This summer, many key players who have contributed to previous successes have left the team. Building a new, cohesive team is a careful process that requires both time and trust.
A new manager deserves space to implement his vision, set standards, shape the squad and make his mark on the style of play.
I took on this role with full faith and energy, but unfortunately, the management was not willing to give me the time and trust that I needed, which I deeply regret. I feel that this was never a relationship based on mutual trust.
Throughout my coaching career I have completed every season, which has brought success. The clubs that have put their faith in me have been rewarded with success and trophies.
Finally, I would like to thank the Bayer Leverkusen fans for their warm and enthusiastic support, and I wish the team and coaching staff every success for the rest of the season," said coach Ten Hag.
Ten Hag's departure from Bayer Leverkusen makes him the third former Man Utd manager to be sacked in the past week, with Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer both sacked by Fenerbahce and Besiktas respectively after seeing their clubs eliminated in the Champions League qualifying rounds.
