Coach Torres causes surprise

Fernando Torres, a one-time icon of Atlético Madrid, is proving his talent as a youth team coach.

Torres was just chosen to lead the Atletico Madrid B team in July.

Under the guidance of "El Niño", Atlético Madrid B currently tops the Primera Federacion Group B, Spain's third-tier football league. This achievement is not only a testament to Torres' managerial talents, but also an affirmation of Atletico's commitment to developing promising young players.

Even more impressive, Torres was only selected to lead the Atletico Madrid B team in July. Before that, he impressed when leading the Atletico Madrid U19 team to a surprise in the UEFA Youth League, a tournament considered the Champions League for youth teams.

Atletico Madrid B have started the 2025/26 season in impressive form, sitting atop Group B with 17 points from nine games. Thanks to a combination of youth and an attacking style, Torres’ side are the league’s top scorers, having enjoyed a five-game unbeaten run from September to mid-October.

Since retiring in 2019, Fernando Torres has been a constant presence in the red and white of Atletico Madrid. In his initial role as technical director for the youth and reserve teams, Torres not only oversaw but was also directly involved in the development of young talent, from selection to coaching.

After taking part in the coaching staff, Torres quickly showed his ability. If Atletico Madrid B can get promoted to the Second Division (Segunda División), it will be a miracle.

Many fans even believe that in case Atlético Madrid part ways with captain Diego Simeone, they could target Torres as a potential replacement candidate.
