In 2024, localities implemented 124 sustainable poverty reduction projects, with models of raising cows, goats, bamboo rats, fish, chickens, mink, making clean salt and growing sugarcane...

Animal and technical support

Mr. Le Van Kien's family (Hai Rieng town, Song Hinh district) is a poor household. In 2024, from the capital source of the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction, his family was supported with 3 million VND to buy breeding stock and build a barn to raise bamboo rats. Although bamboo rats are a new pet, Mr. Kien's family still chose them with the hope of escaping poverty. After nearly 1 year of approaching this rodent, the initial results have been effective. Mr. Kien said: Bamboo rats are easy to raise, grow quickly, and food is readily available in rural and mountainous areas, so the cost is low. Raising bamboo rats also requires little care, but has high economic value.

Meanwhile, Ms. La Thi Bich's family (Son Phuoc commune, Son Hoa district) is raising 4 fattening and breeding cows, half of which are supported by the State from the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction and other programs. Thanks to applying proper confinement techniques and full vaccination, the cows are growing well. Her family escaped poverty in 2024. Ms. Bich shared: "In rural mountainous areas, raising cows is very suitable. If well cared for, cows rarely get sick, and can give birth once a year. I raise fattening cows by cutting grass for them to eat, then cooking porridge from water spinach and rice bran to feed them, so the cows grow quickly, and are ready to be sold after about 1 year."

According to Mr. Ngo Binh Thinh, Chairman of Hai Rieng Town People's Committee, for people in mountainous areas, growing sugarcane and cassava is only enough to cover family expenses. Therefore, poor and near-poor households without land for production must raise cows or other livestock to bring in high income, have surplus and save. The locality is very interested in the implementation of poverty reduction livestock models by the people, so it has directed professional staff to regularly monitor and guide appropriate livestock techniques, helping people have the opportunity to escape poverty sustainably.

Scaling up solutions

According to the assessment of the Steering Committee of the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction for the period 2021-2025, the development and implementation of projects to support production development in the agricultural sector, diversifying livelihoods to reduce poverty has always received the attention and direction of Party committees at all levels, local authorities and the participation of the community, especially the beneficiaries. Mr. Le Ngoc Son, Deputy Head of the Department of Rural Development (Department of Agriculture and Environment) said: Project participants are met according to their needs and wishes; contents and activities are regularly checked and monitored and have access to new scientific and technical advances in production. Thereby, improving qualifications, gradually changing habits and thinking in agricultural production, contributing to improving lives and escaping poverty sustainably".

The whole province strives to reduce the poverty rate to 1.42% by the end of 2025, equivalent to a reduction of 2,711 poor households. The poverty rate of ethnic minority households will decrease by over 3%.

To continue promoting effectiveness, the Provincial People's Committee has just issued a Plan to implement the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction in 2025. Accordingly, the program's goal is to reduce multidimensional poverty, inclusively, sustainably, limit poverty relapse and poverty generation; support the poor and poor households to overcome the minimum living standard, access basic social services according to the national multidimensional poverty standard, and improve the quality of life. The whole province strives to reduce the poverty rate by the end of 2025 to 1.42%, equivalent to a reduction of 2,711 poor households. The rate of ethnic minority poverty households will decrease by over 3%.

“To achieve the above goal, the province continues to implement policies to support electricity bills, preferential credit loans, education , health insurance... for the poor, near-poor households and newly escaped poverty households in a timely manner, targeting the right subjects according to regulations. Along with that, the province also implements poverty reduction projects such as: Diversifying livelihoods, developing poverty reduction models; supporting production development in the agricultural sector; improving nutrition; developing vocational education; supporting sustainable employment; reducing information poverty...”, Mr. Son added.
