“Flow” is the latest animated film by Gints Zilbalodis, a young director from Latvia. Right from the trailer, “Flow” has conquered many audiences through poetic, beautiful, vivid and humorous natural footage. The film received the prestigious Golden Globe Award in 2025 for Best Animated Film and was selected to screen in the Un Certain Regard category at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Flow is also a strong contender for the Oscars alongside works from famous studios such as Inside Out 2 (Pixar) and The Wild Robot (Dreamworks).
The film is set in a post-apocalyptic world without humans. Seeing his home swept away by a flood, a timid gray cat, afraid of water, must embark on an adventure at sea with other animals to survive together.
Not only does the gray cat overcome the eternal fear of water, it also has to fight an even greater fear, the anxiety of living with animals of different personalities. The journey on the boat and on the water often contains unexpected fears. Faced with the unpredictability and gentleness of nature, creatures of different species quietly observe each other and from there learn to accept each other's strengths and weaknesses, thereby becoming more loving and attached to each other.
More broadly, the story of the cat's adventure and the other animals in Flow is also a life lesson for humans. We humans all have our own fears, internal obstacles to overcome, as well as moments of clumsiness and confusion in the face of change. Learning to go with the flow of life, accepting differences and connecting with others is also a journey that helps each individual overcome their previous ego and become a better version of themselves.
Telling stories without using dialogue is also the way director Gints Zilbalodis wants the audience to contemplate life through the subtle gestures and actions of people and objects, as well as to be able to observe more clearly the hidden beauty of mother earth.
The movie “Flow” will be shown in Vietnamese theaters from March 7, 2025.
