Jet lag affects women more than men
According to a study published in the International Journal of Endocrinology, the health effects of disrupted circadian rhythms can lead to a variety of health problems, including mood disorders and cardiovascular problems.
“A woman’s circadian rhythm is influenced by estrogen and progesterone, which regulate the menstrual cycle. These hormones can be disrupted by jet lag, leading to symptoms such as irregular periods, mood swings, and increased susceptibility to sleep disorders. Additionally, women’s bodies can be more susceptible to imbalances in hunger and satiety hormones, making it more difficult to maintain a healthy appetite during jet lag,” says Dr Gopabandhu Datta, Gynaecologist and IVF Consultant, East End Fertility Clinic, Kolkata, India.
Jet lag and hormonal changes in women
According to Dr. Datta, estrogen and progesterone are the main hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle, which can be disrupted by jet lag. These disruptions can lead to:
- Irregular menstrual cycle
- Mood swings
- Sleep disorders
- Jet lag
Symptoms of jet lag that women should pay attention to
Hormonal disorders: Irregular menstrual cycles, mood swings and sleep disturbances.
Metabolic changes: Difficulty maintaining healthy appetite, increased cravings for snacks, and weight changes.
Cognitive challenges: Difficulty concentrating, memory loss, and increased fatigue.
Physical symptoms: Headaches, muscle aches and digestive problems.
How to control
- Track your menstrual cycle to determine hormone-sensitive times and adjust your travel plans accordingly.
- Maintain a healthy diet with regular meals and avoid drinking too much caffeine and alcohol.
- Practice relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga to reduce stress and improve sleep quality.
- Create a comfortable sleeping environment and limit screen time before bed.
- Consult a doctor if you experience severe or persistent symptoms.
