A budget estimate for a folk dance and song performance, sent by a talent training center in District 12 to class 8A1 of Nguyen Chi Thanh Secondary School, is causing a stir on social media because the estimated cost is over 21 million VND.

Specifically, the estimated cost for the folk dance and song performance is 10 million VND for choreography, 5.6 million VND for costume rental, and 6 million VND for food and drinks for the 10 members of the performing arts team, along with sports activities. The total cost for all three items is 21.6 million VND.

In an open letter to the class, the parent representatives stated that one parent in the class had donated 3 million VND, leaving a remaining contribution of 18.6 million VND.

Speaking to VietNamNet reporters, Ms. Lai Thi Bach Huong, Principal of Nguyen Chi Thanh Secondary School, said that the school did not instruct classes to solicit large sums of money from parents for the cultural performance. Upon learning of the incident, she immediately instructed the homeroom teacher and the parent representatives of class 8A1 not to solicit the aforementioned amount of money from parents.

Ms. Huong also added that after the incident, parents working at the talent training center promised to sponsor all the costs for the class to stage the cultural performance. The cost of food and drinks for the students during practice will depend on the parents' ability to contribute.
