Workshop on cooperation between the Academies of Vietnam and the Russian Federation in marine biodiversity and biochemistry investigation

On May 28, in Nha Trang City, the Institute of Oceanography organized a scientific workshop on “Cooperation between the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and the Far Eastern Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences (FEB RAS) in investigating and surveying marine biodiversity and biochemistry; outstanding achievements in the 2018-2025 roadmap and prospects”.

Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Dinh Van Thieu spoke at the workshop.

The workshop was connected online with the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and the Far Eastern Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences. Attending the online workshop were Professor, Academician Chau Van Minh - Member of the Party Central Committee, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology; Professor, Academician Yury Kulchin - Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, President of the Far Eastern Branch. Attending the workshop in person at the Institute of Oceanography were Mr. Dinh Van Thieu - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Viet Ha - Director of the Institute of Oceanography; and many scientists from Vietnam and the Russian Federation.

The workshop preliminarily assessed the results of the joint survey in 2025 with reports on marine biological sampling, biodiversity and ecological characteristics in the survey areas; summarized the cooperation between VAST and FEB RAS in the period of 2016 - 2025; presented outstanding results from the survey program using the Academician Oparin ship, research on coral reef ecosystems and marine biological compounds with potential applications...

Over 20 years of cooperation (2005 - 2025), the Academies of the two countries have conducted 10 joint surveys, including 9 surveys on marine biodiversity and biochemistry by the Oparin Academician in Vietnam's seas. The results have provided a comprehensive and complete set of documents on environmental conditions, biodiversity, and potential bioactive substances from Vietnam's seas. Within the framework of 4 surveys over the past 8 years, the Oparin Academicianian has conducted surveys at 474 stations from the North to the South of Vietnam's seas, collecting nearly 17,000 marine biological specimens for research on biodiversity and bioactivity. This is a very valuable source of scientific documents, contributing to the common understanding of Vietnam's marine environmental resources, guiding the management, protection and sustainable exploitation.

The two countries have also cooperated in training young scientists; jointly published many scientific works, including 33 scientific works in international journals, 3 monographs, and many other national scientific articles. These results are clear evidence of the success of marine science cooperation between the two countries and are an important premise for scientists from both sides to effectively develop a cooperation plan for the next 10 years.
