Workshop on rice production model following VietGAP and applying some new rice varieties

BTO-Binh Thuan Agricultural Extension Center has just coordinated with Ham Thuan Bac District Agricultural Technical and Service Center to organize a workshop and accept the model of "demonstrating rice production according to VietGAP standards - zero-footprint fields" and "demonstrating the application of some new high-quality rice varieties" in the winter-spring crop 2024 - 2025.

The model was implemented on a scale of 26 hectares/24 households in Ham Phu commune (Ham Thuan Bac) from December 2024 to March 2025. The rice varieties used were OM5451, NVP 79, Huong Chau 6, Loc Troi 4. The area of ​​new rice varieties demonstrated 3 types of varieties: Loc Troi 4 with 1 hectare/household; Huong Chau 6 with 1 hectare/household and 3 hectares/5 households of the control variety OM5451. For the VietGAP model and the new rice variety model, the sowing rate is 12 kg/sao.

Both of these models are implemented by Binh Thuan Agricultural Extension Center in collaboration with NetZero Carbon Joint Stock Company and BSB Nano Technology Joint Stock Company - Nanotech to cultivate rice to reduce greenhouse gas emissions "1 must - 6 reductions". This is a method implemented according to the AWD standard "alternate wetting and drying technique" successfully applied by the International Rice Research Institute IRRI in many countries.

Accordingly, households participating in the model need to apply cluster sowing and spraying; alternate wet and dry irrigation. At the same time, apply the technical process of "1 must 6 reductions": must use certified seeds, reduce seed quantity, reduce fertilizer, reduce pesticides, reduce irrigation water, reduce post-harvest losses, reduce greenhouse gas emissions. On the other hand, increase the use of organic fertilizers, biological pesticides; record electronic diaries from the fields instead of traditional paper diaries.

According to the assessment of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, up to now, at harvest time, the VietGAP rice model has a lower number of flowers/ m2 than outside the model by 59 - 99 flowers/ m2 , the new rice variety model has a lower number of flowers/ m2 than outside the model by 52-138 flowers/ m2 . However, the number of solid grains/flowers of the 2 models is higher than outside the model. Therefore, the estimated actual yield of the VietGAP model is 4.35 - 5.96 quintals/ha and the new rice variety demonstration model is 3.86 - 4.57 quintals/ha higher than outside the model.

Through the model, it aims to support farmers in accessing good agricultural production processes and have new rice varieties with superior characteristics, suitable for local natural conditions. On the other hand, it creates safe products, helps increase the value of agricultural products, increases economic efficiency and can supplement the province's variety structure.

From the above model, the provincial Agricultural Extension Center proposed to the Ham Phu Organic Agricultural Cooperative to mill and package low-emission rice products to supply to the market in the coming time. At the same time, it requested the Ham Thuan Bac District Agricultural Technical and Service Center to encourage farmers to introduce two new rice varieties, Huong Chau 6 and Loc Troi 4, to expand production in the locality.
