Over the past few days, the weather has been windy and the sea has been rough, but fisherman Nguyen Van Sam in Phu Hai Ward 3, Phu Thuy Ward, has still gone out to sea. He said that his life has been connected to the sea since he was a teenager, then became a fisherman and is now nearly fifty years old. He has bought countless national flags to hang in the highest, most solemn position of his fishing boat. Because of the harsh sun and wind of the sea, the flags quickly fade and tear, so he always has to buy new ones to replace the old ones. This is his greatest asset, nothing is more precious. If he does not hang the flag, he feels that his fishing boat is bare, less beautiful and is like a house without a roof. Mr. Sam is one of many fishermen in Lam Dong in particular and the whole country in general who have such thoughts in their fishing profession. Even though they face danger, they are determined to protect their boats; protect the national flag, protect the fishing grounds.

In addition to buying flags to hang themselves, many fishermen are also given flags by border guards on holidays, New Year or related events. This is a meaningful gift for fishermen, especially those who are participating in offshore seafood exploitation; contributing to encouraging and cheering the spirit for fishermen to actively go out to sea, stick to the sea, as well as affirming that the mainland always looks towards the sea, the homeland islands, towards the resilient fishermen who stick to the sea and fishing grounds.

Fisherman Nguyen Van Thinh, in Phu Thuy, said while bringing his fishing boat to Phu Hai Port after many days at sea: "Sometimes I receive a flag from the border guard station. Every time I go out to sea with the national flag, I feel my national pride is raised. Because the red flag with a yellow star is a sacred symbol of the Fatherland, the spirit of determination to fight and win of the nation." Just counting Thanh Hai Border Guard Station alone, each year, an average of 100 flags are distributed to fishermen, in 2 forms: directly to fishing boats and combined with giving when there are related events. The flag giving is mainly for fishermen fishing far from shore, however, many fishermen fishing near shore also want to receive flags to show their patriotism. Mr. Tran Van Thanh - Head of Ward 3, Phu Hai said, there are fishermen who have suggested to us that if the border guard gives flags to fishermen, they should also give them to people fishing near shore. For every fisherman, the flag is a sacred symbol of the homeland and country, a source of pride, reminding them that each trip to sea, in addition to earning a living, also contributes to protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland.

Major Tran Duong Khanh - Political Commissar of Thanh Hai Border Guard Station said: Awarding the national flag to fishermen is a regular activity of the unit. Along with patrolling, controlling and having fishermen write commitments, it contributes to raising people's awareness in protecting marine resources as well as making fishermen confident and proud of the traditional profession of the locality and the country. While going out to sea, they are also a force actively participating in protecting the sovereignty and security of the Fatherland. Each flag, each fishing boat of fishermen is a living milestone affirming the sovereignty of the Fatherland.

The sea and islands are a sacred part of the Fatherland’s territory and the source of livelihood for fishermen. The presence of ships with the national flag has added strength, confidence and determination to maintain the sovereignty of the homeland’s sea and islands.
