Shrimp are also known as moi, ruốc, or khuyết by people in North Central Vietnam. There are two shrimp fishing seasons in a year: the Southern season (also called the "chiem" season) in June and July of the lunar calendar, and the Northern season (the "mu" season) which lasts from around the end of August of the lunar calendar until January of the following year.

This season, despite rough seas and cold weather, fishermen from coastal villages in Nam Sam Son and Ngoc Son wards, and Quang Ninh and Tien Trang communes (Thanh Hoa province) set out to sea around 3:30 to 4:00 AM to catch shrimp. By around 7-8 AM, many rafts begin to return to shore for their first trip.

Fisherman Nguyen Xuan To (village 10, Quang Ninh commune) said that during this time, shrimp schools are close to shore, so they have to take advantage of the opportunity to catch them. Each trip yields an average of about 120 to 150 kg of shrimp. After the first trip ashore, the fishermen only take about 15-20 minutes to eat and rest before returning to sea for the second trip. Healthy young men can make up to three trips a day.

In previous months, the price of sea shrimp fluctuated between 8,000 and 10,000 VND/kg; however, the price has now risen significantly. Shrimp sold directly on the beach range from 15,000 to 18,000 VND/kg, sometimes reaching 22,000 VND/kg, depending on the size of the shrimp.

According to fishermen, in the past, shrimp prices were low because they were entirely dependent on the weather. When the weather was humid or rainy, the shrimp couldn't be dried after being caught, and traders would pressure them, leading to unstable prices. However, nowadays there are many steaming and drying facilities, so there's no need to worry about shrimp spoilage or price manipulation. In addition, the price of dried shrimp is currently very high, sometimes reaching 80,000 VND/kg. Thanks to the high price of dried shrimp, the price of fresh shrimp has also increased.
