Vietnam-UK cooperation in innovation and strategic technology development

Over nearly 50 years of establishing diplomatic relations, Vietnam and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland have developed a foundation of extensive cooperation, especially in education, science and technology, renewable energy and innovation.

The two countries' upgrading of relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership from October 29, 2025, opens up many new opportunities for the Vietnamese community in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to play an important bridging role in promoting substantive cooperation between the two countries.

Recently, in London, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung had a working session with the Association of Vietnamese Intellectuals in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (VIS) and attended the Forum "Promoting innovation and developing strategic technology industries in Vietnam: Experience from the UK".

The forum is part of the working program in the UK on science, technology and innovation of Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung from October 29 to November 1.

The event attracted about 100 delegates who are Vietnamese experts, scientists, entrepreneurs and engineers working at universities, research institutes and leading technology corporations in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, demonstrating the spirit of solidarity and connecting Vietnamese knowledge in the world's leading innovation center.

At the forum, delegates shared many experiences, models and practical lessons in developing advanced technology industries of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, focusing on topics such as renewable energy, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum technology, data science, green finance and next-generation telecommunications. Vietnamese entrepreneurs and experts in the UK introduced a series of typical projects demonstrating the potential for technological cooperation between the two countries.

These include the UK-Vietnam renewable energy development cooperation projects implemented by ODE Ltd; the Thames Tideway super sewer project implemented by Scott Wilson; the application of quantum dots and infrared sensors developed by Quantum Science; solutions for green ammonia and green hydrogen in the energy transition introduced by BP Group; along with the prospects of cooperation in the fields of artificial intelligence and 6G mobile networks of young Vietnamese technology experts in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Within the framework of the program, the National Innovation Center (NIC), the Ministry of Finance and the Association of Vietnamese Intellectuals in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (VIS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance coordination in implementing initiatives on innovation, creative startups and connecting technology investment between the two sides. Accordingly, the two sides will promote connection activities between enterprises - research institutes - universities, jointly implement projects in 11 national strategic technology groups, contributing to building an international standard innovation ecosystem in Vietnam.

Speaking at the forum, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung highly appreciated the valuable practical contributions of the delegates; suggested continuing to promote the role and close connection in innovation, developing strategic technology industries as well as promoting cooperation initiatives to develop strategic technology industries in which the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has many strengths such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum, renewable energy, advanced biomedical technology, robotics, automation and green finance...

On this occasion, the Deputy Prime Minister called on Vietnamese experts and intellectuals in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to promote academic exchanges, policy advice, and support Vietnam in building a sustainable innovation ecosystem, while spreading the spirit of cooperation and inspiring innovation to the young generation of Vietnamese people in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

“The Vietnamese Government always deeply respects and affirms that the community of Vietnamese intellectuals, experts and businessmen abroad is an indispensable sacred part that creates the will and endogenous strength of the nation. I strongly hope that, with their intellectual foundation, international experience and patriotism, Vietnamese experts and intellectuals in the UK will continue to turn their passion into motivation, turn knowledge into resources, contributing to realizing the aspiration to develop a prosperous and powerful country in the new period,” the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.
