This sentiment has spread to Europe, making it difficult for Huawei to pursue its global ambitions. However, a recent study by Strand Consult found that Huawei still maintains a strong presence in 5G infrastructure in Europe.
Competitive pricing makes it difficult for the EU to abandon Huawei's 5G telecom equipment
Although Huawei’s presence has been declining over the years, it remains significant despite recommendations from the European Union (EU). According to research published by Light Reading, about a third of 5G cities in 32 EU countries are still using Huawei technology, a situation that appears to show no signs of abating as of Q2 2022.
Europe still can't 'remove' Huawei's 5G infrastructure
This suggests that, despite EU recommendations to restrict the use of equipment from Chinese vendors, many governments have yet to take concrete measures. Strand Consult predicts that by the end of the decade, Chinese companies will still have a significant presence in EU telecoms infrastructure, with Huawei’s market share expected to reach around 29% by 2028, down from 36% in mid-2022 and 32% by the end of 2024.
One of the main reasons why EU carriers continue to rely on Huawei equipment is its competitive pricing compared to Nordic rivals like Nokia and Ericsson. Despite concerns about spying capabilities from Huawei equipment, the company has repeatedly denied the allegations and insisted that its products do not contain “backdoors.”
Even as Chinese companies' presence in EU telecoms infrastructure has declined significantly during the 4G era, they still account for around half of the market, with Huawei remaining a major player in the region's 5G sector.
