Centralized wastewater treatment in urban areas has not reached 60-70%

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Construction Huynh Tan Loc, Resolution No. 185/2015/NQ-HDND issued in 2015 by the Provincial People's Council determined the target by 2020, 60-70% of urban areas will have centralized drainage and wastewater treatment systems; in which, for urban areas of type IV and above, this rate is 70%. However, by mid-2025, the results of implementing this goal have been very modest.

Currently, in the whole province, only Bien Hoa urban area has Wastewater Treatment Plant No. 1 with a capacity of 3,000 m³/day operating since 2018. The Drainage and Wastewater Treatment System Project No. 2 with a capacity of 39,000 m³/day is temporarily suspended. Urban areas such as Long Khanh, Trang Bom, Long Thanh, Nhon Trach... have projects, which have been updated in the provincial planning, but these projects are still in the process of being approved and calling for investment.

Mr. Loc said that the need to invest in wastewater collection networks and treatment systems in urban areas is very urgent. However, investment projects to build wastewater collection networks and treatment systems in urban areas require huge investment capital, which is difficult to balance from local budgets, while these projects find it difficult to call for investment from other sources.

The solution is to prioritize capital allocation to invest in urban drainage and wastewater treatment projects according to approved planning. Identify priority projects to propose a list of projects calling for investment. Speed up compensation, support, and resettlement to soon have land available for construction.
