"Paving the way" for economic development

My Lung commune has 1,469 households with more than 5,000 people, of which ethnic minorities account for 80%. In previous years, people's lives in the commune were very difficult, they relied on the fields and forests all year round but still lacked, the poverty rate was up to 40%. With the attention and investment of the Party and the State in building infrastructure, agricultural production, and social culture, the appearance of the mountainous countryside of My Lung commune has gradually "changed its appearance".

With the characteristics of a mountainous commune, My Lung has formed concentrated production areas for growing industrial crops, fruit trees, various vegetables, and forming a paper material area, which is an advantageous industry of the region. The commune's agricultural products are relatively rich and diverse, with many types of food crops and flowers. In particular, the commune has built the brand of Ga Gay sticky rice, a famous local specialty.

In early 2022, the provincial-level scientific project: "Restoring and proposing solutions to preserve and promote some typical cultural heritages of the Muong ethnic group associated with community tourism development in My Lung commune, Yen Lap district, Phu Tho province" was approved, marking a new development process for My Lung commune.

Infrastructure has been gradually invested, My Lung people are excited to travel on new roads. In zone 9, the project to renovate and upgrade new rural roads was completed not long ago, making it easier for households to travel and produce. The new concrete road has a total length of more than 900m, with a road surface of 4m wide. Thanks to the consensus and support of the people who donated over 1,000m2 of land, crops, and materials, the project was completed on schedule.

Mr. Dinh Cong Thang - Head of Zone 9, My Lung Commune said: "Since this road was built, people have found it very convenient to transport materials to build houses, harvest and sell crops... People's lives have since improved and enhanced a lot."

The investment and upgrading of transport infrastructure will "pave the way" for many types of economic development, especially tourism. With the goal of "Documenting and restoring some typical cultural heritages of the Muong ethnic group in Yen Lap district, thereby contributing to preserving and maintaining the unique cultural identity of the Muong ethnic group", Yen Lap district will restore four typical cultural heritages of the Muong ethnic group in My Lung commune including: Dong Suong communal house; tools, production tools, traditional handicrafts; Ha Dien festival; gong performance, Cham Duong, Cham Ong, Senh Tien dance, Drum Swing, Vi singing, Rang singing.

The future of poverty alleviation through tourism

Mr. Dinh Xuan Quang in Zone 1, My Lung Commune - one of the households investing in buying wood and traditional Muong items (looms, rice mortars, water wheels, etc.) to build a stilt house. His upcoming goal is to turn the traditional stilt house into a place for tourists to stay when returning to their homeland. Muong stilt houses are mainly made of ironwood, teak, lim, etc., which are durable for hundreds of years. He shared his plan for a stilt house built next to a water wheel, looking straight out to the stream with a cozy atmosphere in the house spread by the image of mothers sitting at looms weaving, children sitting around the fire. He hopes that these images will leave a good impression on tourists when they return to this land.

In addition to investing in building cultural spaces, to keep up with the digital age, in the coming time, Yen Lap district will document and digitize documents on traditional cultural heritage of the Muong ethnic group in the area. Specifically, documenting tangible cultural heritage includes natural conditions, culture, society, daily life and production labor. Documenting intangible cultural heritage includes groups of languages, writings, folk literature, folk performing arts, social customs, traditional festivals, folk knowledge, etc. The list of typical traditional cultural heritages of the Muong ethnic group in My Lung commune selected and restored includes: Dong Suong Communal House relic, traditional labor tools (rice mortar, water wheel, loom, etc.), Ha Dien festival and gong performance, Cham Duong, Senh Tien dance, Swing drum, Vi singing, Rang singing, etc.

Comrade Dinh Tien Duat - Chairman of My Lung Commune People's Committee said: "Developing community tourism in My Lung Commune is part of the project to restore, preserve and promote a number of typical cultural heritages of the Muong ethnic group in Yen Lap District. Right now, the political system and local people have joined in and achieved high consensus and unanimity, especially in mass mobilization work, donating land to build traffic infrastructure and cultural and religious works. Along with that, the commune continues to mobilize social resources from the people to develop accommodation facilities, contributing to perfecting the infrastructure serving local tourism development".

Developing community tourism in My Lung commune is considered a new direction in economic development in the mountainous district of Yen Lap. With the right vision and the mobilization of the people's consensus, in the future, community tourism is expected to help the local people develop their economy and promises to turn My Lung into a stopover for tourists when they return to the Land of Ancestors.
