In a press conference before departing for Miss Universe 2025, Huong Giang candidly shared her thoughts on the controversy surrounding transgender participation in the competition.
Responding to a question about her gender on her application documents, Huong Giang stated that Miss Universe updates the regulations with the national director each year, and there is no specific document on the website. She confirmed that she had discussed the matter with the national director and had all the necessary documents as required by the organizers.
Huong Giang responds to questions about gender identity when participating in Miss Universe 2025:
When asked whether a transgender woman's participation in Miss Universe was taking away opportunities from other women, given that there are already competitions specifically for transgender people, Huong Giang responded in English, emphasizing that being a woman is not just about appearance or biological sex, but about love, spirit, and living authentically.
"I'm not taking anything away from other women; we're working together to define women's strength and success in all circumstances. This isn't just a beauty contest anymore. That era is over," she asserted.

When asked whether transgender women would detract from the unique character of Miss Universe, Huong Giang cited the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, which consistently emphasize gender equality and reducing inequality. She argued that the presence of people like herself, mothers, and married women is proof of the diversity that Miss Universe is striving for.
"My appearance doesn't diminish the essence of Miss Universe; rather, it's an important factor waiting to prove that they create a truly inclusive platform for diversity worldwide ," Huong Giang emphasized.
Regarding concerns about this decision, which could bring both advantages and disadvantages, Huong Giang shared that her goal was not to increase her popularity.
"This is an opportunity for the world to see how elegant and beautiful someone like me can be, and from that, they will change their perception of the community. Once the purpose is clearly defined, whether we gain or lose doesn't matter," she said.
Another question arises: at 33, should Huong Giang "give way" to a younger generation? She frankly stated that this is unfair, as the typical retirement age is 50-60 years old.
"Throughout my 13 years in this profession, no one has ever given me an opportunity. Everything I have achieved is the result of my hard work since I was 20 years old," she shared. Huong Giang also said that she always creates opportunities for others through her role as a mentor in various programs.
Regarding her preparation for the competition, Huong Giang stated that for the past 13 years, she has been on a journey towards her own aspirations and mission, rather than preparing for any specific competition.
She admitted she wasn't wearing a crown when she appeared at the press conference, but argued that this fit the theme of this year's Miss Universe: Beyond the Crown .
Looking back on her journey, Huong Giang mentioned important milestones: In 2012, she became the first transgender person to appear on national television when she participated in Vietnam Idol. After that, Huong Giang became Miss International Transgender. She emotionally shared that even now, standing on the stage, she still can't believe it's true.
"I can't promise where this journey will lead. But if there's an opportunity to increase my influence, I won't do it alone. I'm carrying the hopes of many people. If I can leave a historical mark at Miss Universe, I will use it to spread positive values," Huong Giang affirmed.
Regarding her competitors, she said that the Asian representatives this year are all beautiful, but she will treat them like younger sisters rather than rivals, so that she can be as relaxed as possible when entering the Miss Universe competition.
