The Ministry of Health of Israel said that COVID-19 prevention and control activities will be transferred to health insurance agencies and the hospital system. The costs for patients to be tested and treated will be covered according to insurance regulations. The resources saved from this will be invested in upgrading public health and concentrated in disadvantaged areas.
Israelis are still eligible for free COVID-19 testing at state-designated facilities, except for testing to receive a certificate before traveling abroad.
In January, Israel dismantled makeshift COVID-19 testing stations set up during the pandemic; since February, it has downgraded the COVID-19 pandemic to a common epidemic, like seasonal flu.
According to statistics from the Israeli Ministry of Health , in the week ending June 17, 2023, the average number of COVID-19 cases in Israel was less than 100 people/day. In total, since the outbreak, there have been 4.82 million infected people in this country, of which more than 12,000 have died.
