The Italian army will buy dozens of tracked combat vehicles from the Leonardo-Rheinmetall Military Vehicles joint venture. And Italy will also become the first country with this type of modern equipment.
The order marks the first joint venture contract between two leading European defense groups and is an early step in the modernization of Italy's combat vehicle fleet, the company announced today.
“This order brings two companies, as well as two of Europe’s largest countries, closer together. Cooperation is no longer optional — it is the core of European strategic sovereignty ,” said David Hoeder, Executive Chairman of the German-Italian joint venture, in a press release.
According to the announcement, the Italian Army will receive five Rheinmetall Lynx KF-41 vehicles equipped with Lance turrets.
Next up are 16 vehicles “newly configured with the same chassis and Leonardo's 30mm Hitfist turret.”
The first vehicle is expected to be delivered later this year, and then the first five Lynxes will also be upgraded to the new configuration.
The deal also includes an option to purchase 30 more vehicles, along with “training and simulation systems to better train crews.”
Rheinmetall and Leonardo announced the innovatively named joint venture in July 2024, with the aim of developing new main battle tanks and infantry fighting vehicles for the Italian Army, based on Rheinmetall's existing systems.
“With the newly developed Panther main battle tank and the new Lynx infantry fighting vehicle, Rheinmetall possesses the right platform technology to develop both programs,” the German company said at the time of the joint venture announcement.
This first batch of tracked vehicles is “within the scope” of the Army Armored Combat System (A2CS) program, which the joint venture said will “purchase a total” of 1,050 armored fighting vehicles.
Together with future contracts expected for the main battle tank program, “will renew the entire heavy vehicle fleet of the Italian Army,” the consortium stressed.
