Long Son Great House is located on the eastern slope of Nua Mountain, in Long Son Island Commune (HCMC). The relic site with its unique architecture attracts tens of thousands of tourists every year. In 1991, the entire Long Son Great House was recognized as a National Historical and Cultural Relic.
Long Son Great House was built by Mr. Tran (real name Le Van Muu, from An Giang , came to Long Son island to reclaim land and settle around 1900) from 1910 to 1929.
Initially, Mr. Tran built the Holy House (worshiping Confucius) as the main hall. In the following years, he built the Sky Tower, the Fairy Tower, the Buddha Tower, the Forbidden Tower, the Long Tower, the Rear Hall, the Assembly Hall, the three-entrance gate, the flower garden, and two entrance gates to the worship area. The works serving the people's lives and education are all located in the Great House relic complex, about 20,000 square meters wide.
Nha Lon - Long Son consists of many houses with the same architectural style as Vietnamese communal houses but without any overall plan. The houses with upper floors and lower floors are interspersed, unbalanced, without front or back, creating a strange architectural layout, strictly breaking the construction law of the time.
Inside the main hall, there are still many precious wooden objects such as altar cabinets, beds, and the "eight immortals" table and chair set carved with sophisticated lines and patterns, about 100 years old. Four paintings in Nom script about the story of Luc Van Tien, by Mr. Do Chieu. The decorative works here all show high artistic value in both sculpture and decorative arts.
The buildings he built were all located in the same area, so people used to call it the Big House. Since Mr. Tran passed away in 1935, many generations of local people have strictly preserved and maintained the communal lifestyle. That is the motto, taking "Humanity - Courtesy - Righteousness - Wisdom - Trust" as the way of life. In particular, Mr. Tran's descendants still maintain the lifestyle with black Ao Ba Ba, hair in a bun, writing parallel sentences in spring... and many other beautiful traditional features.
