According to a VNA correspondent in Mexico, lasting from September 30 to October 5, this event is part of a series of foreign affairs activities of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Committee in Mexico (ACMC) to enhance understanding and strengthen solidarity and friendship between ASEAN member countries and Mexico in general and with the Mexican legislative body in particular.
Speaking at the event, Vice President of the Mexican House of Representatives Paulina Rubio Fernández appreciated the efforts of ASEAN countries in maintaining and enriching this annual activity right at the Mexican legislative body, and emphasized that the event not only contributes to enhancing mutual understanding between the people of the two sides, but also demonstrates the solidarity, trust and shared responsibility for a fair, multilateral and sustainable international order.
Appreciating the role of ASEAN in the international arena, Vice President of the House of Representatives Fernández said that ASEAN is not only a regional organization, but also plays a pivotal role in promoting cooperation between regions in the world , including Latin America.
On behalf of the ASEAN diplomatic delegation, Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Van Hai, ACMC's rotating chairman, stated that ASEAN and Mexico share many common values such as respect for independence, cultural diversity and support for multilateralism, thereby creating a solid foundation to promote substantive cooperation within the framework of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans -Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) as well as between ASEAN and the Pacific Alliance.
Reviewing ASEAN's outstanding achievements over the past half century, including the admission of Timor Leste as the 11th member at the ASEAN Summit in October 2025, Ambassador Nguyen Van Hai emphasized that this is a vivid demonstration of ASEAN's spirit of solidarity and inclusiveness.
Meanwhile, Mr. Fernando González Saiffe, Director General of the Asia-Pacific Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, recounted the story of the similarities in many aspects between Mexico and ASEAN, including sharing thousands of years of cultural history, as well as the common view of valuing compliance with international law and multilateralism.
According to Mr. Saiffe, Mexico wishes to learn from ASEAN's experience in maintaining high economic growth, both during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis and in the post-pandemic period, and expressed gratitude to the ASEAN Committee in Mexico for coordinating the organization of the ASEAN Week in the House of Representatives, considering this a clear demonstration of the closeness and effective cooperation between the two regions.
Organized by ACMC - a committee comprising the Embassies of Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Mexican House of Representatives, ASEAN Week in the Mexican House of Representatives includes many activities promoting the unique cultural features of ASEAN member countries such as folk music and dance, traditional cuisine and photo exhibitions about the country and its people.
