Along with the beauty of nature, the diverse cultural identity crystallized through many generations has created a unique image for this land. In its development orientation, Cao Bang is determined to become a tourist center of the northern midland mountainous region.

Ban Gioc Waterfall - representative image of Cao Bang tourism.

Where nature and culture blend

When mentioning Cao Bang, many people will surely think of Ban Gioc waterfall (Dam Thuy commune, Trung Khanh district) - the largest natural waterfall in Southeast Asia and one of the 10 most magnificent waterfalls in the world . The majestic, pristine beauty and the preserved core geological and cultural values have affirmed the uniqueness of Ban Gioc waterfall. Ban Gioc waterfall tourist area, where many famous landscapes converge such as Ban Gioc waterfall, Nguom Ngao cave, Phat Tich Truc Lam Ban Gioc pagoda, Khuoi Ky stone village... was recognized as a National Landscape in 1998.

Not only that, Cao Bang also owns many unique landscapes with great potential for tourism development such as Thang Hen Lake, Nguom Puc Cave, Mat Than Mountain (Thou Mountain), Phja Oac - Phja Den National Park... In particular, Non Nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO Global Geopark - a place that gathers more than 130 unique heritage sites, reflecting the 500 million-year history of the Earth's formation, has been voted by the American travel magazine Insider as one of the 50 most attractive landscapes in the world.

In addition to its natural attractions, Cao Bang also has a rich history and diverse culture formed from a rich system of tangible and intangible cultural heritages of 20 ethnic groups. Among more than 2,000 preserved intangible cultural heritages, the most notable is the Then practice heritage of the Tay, Nung, and Thai people, which was recognized by UNESCO as a representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2022. Along with that are more than 200 historical and cultural relics, of which 101 have been ranked at all levels.

Cao Bang is also a province that owns a system of revolutionary resistance relics that is outstanding compared to other places. As a land with a long revolutionary tradition and the origin of the Vietnamese revolution, Cao Bang still preserves important relics such as the Pac Bo National Special Relic Site (Ha Quang District), where leader Nguyen Ai Quoc set foot in the country, lived and worked, leading the Vietnamese revolution to gain national independence from 1941 - 1945; Tran Hung Dao Forest National Special Relic Site (Nguyen Binh District), where the Vietnam Propaganda Liberation Army was established (December 22, 1944), the predecessor of the Vietnam People's Army; The special national relic site of the 1950 Border Victory Site (Thach An district), the only place where President Ho Chi Minh directly went to the front to command the campaign... These are valuable "assets" for Cao Bang to develop tourism, bringing the image of the people and land of Cao Bang to domestic and foreign tourists.

Removing “bottlenecks”

Despite possessing diverse and potential tourism resources, Cao Bang tourism faces many challenges to develop and affirm its brand. Chairman of Cao Bang Provincial People's Committee Hoang Xuan Anh frankly pointed out the limitations and difficulties such as the lack of synchronization in socio-economic infrastructure (transportation, tourism - services, border gates, urban areas, rural areas...). In particular, traffic infrastructure is a major "bottleneck" that directly impacts socio-economic development, affecting investment calling activities and attracting tourists to Cao Bang. In addition, investment resources for tourism activities are still modest, not commensurate with demand and potential; technical facilities serving tourism are limited in both quantity and quality; tourism human resources have not met the requirements in terms of quantity and capacity; Tourism promotion activities lack long-term and effective strategies... In addition to the above "bottlenecks", Cao Bang also lacks unique products to compete with neighboring provinces such as Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, Bac Kan, Lang Son... which are currently attractive destinations.

To clear the “bottlenecks”, Director of Sen Rung Tourism Trading Joint Stock Company Tran Thi Huyen Thanh said that Cao Bang needs to have specific products. For example, building unique and different products from the advantages of Non Nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO Global Geopark such as Glamping tourism (high-class camping) in low hills with beautiful landscapes, while also introducing high-class and quality experiences to attract high-spending customers to develop sustainable tourism and bring economic efficiency. In addition, the province needs to step up promotional activities, focusing on the content of “Non Nuoc Cao Bang - Fairyland” to highlight the distinct advantages of the people and this land.

Agreeing with the view that it is necessary to develop products with distinct brands and quality, Director of Typic Viet Trading and Tourism Company Limited Do Quang Tien suggested that Cao Bang should take advantage of the 333km Vietnam - China border to invest in building and strongly developing border tourism routes, building a border homestay system associated with indigenous cultural experiences, learning about traditional history to create a unique product. The target audience is domestic tourists, especially young people who love adventure and experience.

With specific strategies in building a distinct destination brand, Cao Bang tourism will soon affirm its position on the Vietnamese tourism map.
