Promoting a reading culture among young people.

Where do printed books fit in amidst the myriad of entertainment options available to young people? That's a common question and a concern for many.

In reality, reading printed books is now only popular among a small segment of young people, as the majority tend to seek out faster and more convenient means of information acquisition such as ebooks, audiobooks, or summary videos . Bao Ngoc, a student at the Academy of Journalism and Communication, shared: "Firstly, there's the issue of money spent on books, while using ebooks is more economical and allows access to a wider selection of books."

The explosion of digital technology has opened up many attractive entertainment options. In the fast-paced world of studying, working, and leisure, time for reading seems to be shrinking. Even more so in recent years, a new trend has emerged: searching for information through artificial intelligence (AI). Instead of reading a book from beginning to end, young people can use chatbots or AI software to quickly search for key points and core information. This is believed to potentially change the way people approach knowledge and influence their critical thinking abilities.

Lecturer Huynh Ho Dai Nghia from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance shared: "The choice is up to each individual, but if we rely too much on AI, it will gradually erode our ability to choose. The daily overuse of AI will become a fixed reflex and stifle proactive thinking and research skills. The biggest challenge today is not a lack of books or access channels, but a lack of long-term connection between readers and books."

However, this does not mean that efforts to attract young people to printed books have disappeared. Vietnam's Book and Reading Culture Day (April 21st) is not only an occasion to honor books and those who create them, but also a reminder to the community, especially the younger generation, about the importance of reading in their spiritual and intellectual lives. Aiming to spread the habit of reading and foster a lifelong learning spirit, many activities have been and are being organized throughout the country. Alongside this, the "Nha Nam Book Fair: Welcoming Summer 2025" event, with its diverse selection of books, attractive promotions, and open interactive space, has attracted the attention of young people. Beyond simply buying books, many young people actively participate in discussions, share their personal reading perspectives, and connect with others who share the same passion. The event will take place from April 16-20, 2025 in three major cities: Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City.

According to a representative from Nha Nam Publishing Company, young people's book-choosing habits may be influenced by media coverage on social media platforms. Additionally, eye-catching book covers and impressive titles play a crucial role in attracting initial attention, inspiring, and motivating young people to engage with books.

In reality, the story of reading culture is not just the responsibility of authors and publishers; it needs to be built starting from schools and families. Mr. Le Hoang, Vice President of the Vietnam Publishers Association, shared: “Schools are a very important part, but I also want to emphasize the role of the family. We are responsible for helping our children, grandchildren, and younger siblings to engage with books and develop a reading habit from the age of 5 or 6.” At the same time, Mr. Hoang suggested that schools should incorporate reading sessions into the regular curriculum at all levels. Only when the younger generation truly loves and understands the core value of books can they develop comprehensively in terms of intellect, spirit, and character.
