From investment resources of national target programs, Tra Lien commune has integrated resources to support people in doing business and rising out of poverty.
Striving to rise
In Ba Huong village (Tra Lien commune), in recent years, many households have risen above poverty sustainably with policy support and their own efforts.
Ms. Tra Thi Thu Hien's family is a household that will escape poverty sustainably in 2023. Ms. Hien said that when she was still a poor household in the village, her family was supported with a pair of breeding cows and additional seedlings of pomelos and tangerines.
The couple made the most of the land in the garden, planting trees, planting crops, raising cows, pigs and chickens along the riverbank. When it was honey season, the couple went to the forest to collect honey to sell, and raised a few beehives in the garden, creating a source of income for the family.
Mrs. Hien said: "Since the government has supported us, my husband and I have also tried to escape poverty. Now our life is better, thanks to the initial support and the help of the village and commune that always encourage the family."
For poor ethnic minority households in Tra Lien commune, sustainable poverty escape is a journey that requires maximum effort from each individual and poor household.
Like the case of Mr. Huynh Van Nien (Co ethnic group, in Tak Ngui village), with his own will and determination, he and his wife learned to do business and rose up to escape poverty.
The State's policy supported his family with a pair of breeding cows, which he took care of and raised to increase the herd. He saved up to buy more chickens to raise. Then, with the guidance of the commune, he learned more and bought Tien Phuoc pepper seeds to plant on the 3,000m2 garden his parents gave him.
In the same garden, he planted areca nuts around it, and vegetables below, so that he could earn a living. The pepper garden has 250 baskets and has been harvested, each season yielding 70-80kg, with a price of 300,000 VND/kg of dry pepper, bringing in a decent income for the family.
Mr. Nien said: "In 2025, my family received 60 million VND from the State to demolish the temporary house. With the savings, I am building a more solid house.
Before, I really didn't know what to do to escape poverty; when I received specific instructions, learned more information online, and received support, I dared to do business. This year, I will escape poverty, and my life will be better."
Sustainable poverty reduction
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thang, Head of Ba Huong village, shared that accompanying poor households to escape poverty sustainably requires the perseverance and persistence of grassroots cadres and the village people's committee.
In Ba Huong village, in the period of 2021 - 2025, every year the Party Cell has a thematic resolution on accompanying poor households. The Party Cell assigns party members to accompany, support, and help poor households so that they have a way to do business and escape poverty sustainably. "Information on poverty reduction policies, policies to support people, especially poor households in housing, domestic water, seedlings, loans for education, vocational training, job referrals, loans for business... are all widely disseminated by the village to the people so that they can register to participate.
Party members assigned to accompany and help also regularly visit poor households, listen to what they want to do, what children to raise or what trees to plant, and then propose to the Commune People's Committee to synthesize and provide appropriate support. Thanks to this approach, Ba Huong village now has only 24 poor households out of a total of 197 households," said Mr. Thang.
Implementing the contents of the national target program such as sustainable poverty reduction, or socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas in the period of 2021 - 2025, mountainous localities, including Tra Lien commune, have been invested in, speeding up the construction of infrastructure, shifting the structure of production, cultivation and livestock.
People are also supported in all aspects such as health care, education , vocational training, and employment. From there, the gap between regions is gradually narrowed, creating motivation for people to develop the economy, reduce poverty sustainably, and preserve traditional cultural identity.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Thong, Vice Chairman of Tra Lien Commune People's Committee, said that in the locality, economic development has been implemented quite effectively by the people, bringing about a shift in the commune's economic structure towards market linkage, creating stable output.
Since then, Tra Lien's poverty rate has decreased from 65% with 1,043 poor households in 2021 to 32% with 453 poor households. Average income per capita has increased from 24 million VND in 2021 to 36 million VND in 2024.
"The sustainable poverty reduction in mountainous areas often faces more difficulties because of difficult economic, social and commercial conditions. But with the efforts of the entire political system and the efforts of the people, the face of Tra Lien commune has changed.
With the total investment from national target programs in Tra Lien commune, along with the people's awareness of sustainable poverty reduction, the commune is gradually improving people's lives, making the poverty reduction process more sustainable, moving towards building a new life in this mountainous commune" - Mr. Thong said.
