Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom: The truth of the times, the goal of the Vietnamese revolution

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên02/09/2023

Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom. This is the principle of the Vietnamese revolution, the truth of the times, and the philosophy of life of our people.

Young Nguyen Tat Thanh was born into a patriotic Confucian family in Nghe An. His father was Nguyen Sinh Sac, a Confucian scholar who passed the imperial examinations, but in his ideology, it was not "loyalty to the king and patriotism", but "patriotism is patriotism to the people": to love the country is to love the people, to love the people is to love the country. This progressive ideology laid the foundation and formed very early the patriotism and love for the people of young Nguyen Tat Thanh. Nguyen Ai Quoc - Ho Chi Minh's journey to find a way to save the country was for the purpose of: "independence for my Fatherland, freedom for my compatriots".

On February 3, 1930, Nguyen Ai Quoc chaired the Party Unification Conference, establishing the political party of the working class, the Communist Party of Vietnam; at the same time, through the Party's Brief Platform and the Party's Brief Strategy, he affirmed the goal of the Vietnamese revolution "to carry out bourgeois democratic revolution and land revolution to move towards a communist society". Thus, in the Party's first Political Platform, the strategic goal of the Vietnamese revolution was clearly defined: national independence associated with socialism.

In May 1941, he convened and chaired the 8th Conference of the Party Central Committee. The Conference Resolution affirmed: "At this time, if we do not solve the problem of national liberation and demand freedom and independence for the entire nation, not only will the entire nation and people continue to live like horses and buffaloes, but the interests of a segment of the class will not be regained for thousands of years." The Conference Resolution profoundly and completely demonstrated the path to national liberation, marking a new step forward in revolutionary thinking and the leadership of the Party. This is a conference of special historical significance for our country's revolution. The Resolution of the 8th Conference and the wise policies of leader Ho Chi Minh had a decisive significance for the victory of the August Revolution.

On September 2, 1945, Ho Chi Minh solemnly read the Declaration of Independence at Ba Dinh Square, giving birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. He declared and affirmed the will and determination of the entire Vietnamese people to maintain independence and freedom. When the entire Vietnamese people entered the resistance war against French colonialism, on December 20, 1946, Ho Chi Minh read the Call for National Resistance with the spirit "No! We would rather sacrifice everything than lose our country, than become slaves". The resistance war against French colonialism lasted for 9 years, full of hardships and difficulties, but with the Dien Bien Phu victory "famous in five continents, shaking the earth", the French colonialists had to accept defeat and raise the white flag of surrender.

Entering the resistance war against the US was a great difficulty and challenge for our nation, because at this time we had to face an enemy with real economic and military strength. Recognizing that situation, the viewpoint of the Party and Ho Chi Minh was to continue to promote the internal strength of the great national unity bloc, because it was the internal strength of the nation that firmly protected the citadel of national independence. Right in the period of preparing for the resistance war against foreign invaders nationwide, President Ho Chi Minh pointed out: "Today's war is complicated and extremely difficult. Without using the full strength of the people in all aspects to respond, victory cannot be achieved". Under the leadership of the Party, the people of the whole country became a unified body, from the mainland to the islands, inseparable, as President Ho Chi Minh affirmed: "Vietnam is one, the Vietnamese people are one".

Then, when the US directly sent troops and vassal troops into Vietnam, intensified the war of aggression in the South and conducted a war of destruction against the North, on July 17, 1966, President Ho Chi Minh issued an appeal to fight against the US, save the country, calling on all compatriots and soldiers nationwide to be one, to protect the truth "Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom".

In that arduous struggle, our people will certainly win, because we are waging a just war with the strength of the entire people to gain and maintain independence for the nation and freedom for all people. President Ho Chi Minh's appeal is truly a new source of motivation contributing to further tightening the great national unity bloc to realize the aspiration for independence and freedom and bringing the entire Vietnamese people into the historic struggle, with firm belief in the final victory.

In the spring of 1968, after the great victories of our army and people on the battlefield, with the idea of proactively attacking the enemy, our Party advocated launching the General Offensive and Uprising of Tet Mau Than, bankrupting the "Local War" strategy and shaking the enemy's ambition to invade, forcing them to de-escalate the war and sit down for negotiations at the Paris Conference. The struggle against the US to save the country of our people up to that point, although still facing many difficulties and hardships, the possibility of victory "fighting to make the US leave, fighting to make the puppet regime fall" was clearly demonstrated.

In 1969, the passing of President Ho was a great loss to our people and the Vietnamese revolution. Before leaving, he left a Will. Although written in the midst of the fiercest war, the Will still shone with the belief in the inevitable victory of the resistance war against the US, liberating the South, and unifying the country: "No matter how difficult or arduous, our people will definitely win. The US imperialists must get out of our country. Our Fatherland will definitely be unified. The people of the South and the North will definitely be reunited." With the belief in justice, in the strength of national unity towards the common goal: liberating the South, unifying the country, building an independent, democratic and prosperous Vietnam, in his Will, he emphasized the word "certainly" three times, affirming it as an objective law, because it is the victory of civilization over brutality, the victory of patriotism. That was the belief and combined strength of the entire Vietnamese people to achieve the victory of the historic Spring General Offensive and Uprising in 1975.

The victory of the resistance war against the US to save the country was the victory of the spirit, bravery and intelligence of the Vietnamese people themselves, of the entire Vietnamese nation. It was the strength of the miraculous Vietnamese people's war with the great sacrifices of the Southern soldiers and compatriots on the great front line and the wholehearted support of the great rear base in the North with the spirit of "not a pound of rice missing, not a soldier missing", with the determination to "cut through the Truong Son range to save the country, with hearts full of hope for the future"; it was the victory of the aspiration for national independence, freedom and national unification of the Vietnamese people.

The great contributions of President Ho Chi Minh were affirmed in the Eulogy of the Central Executive Committee of the Vietnam Workers' Party: "He is the symbol of the quintessence of the Vietnamese nation, of the indomitable will of the Vietnamese people throughout four thousand years of history. Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom." This is the revolutionary principle, the truth of the times, the philosophy of life of our nation, the duty and responsibility of every Vietnamese citizen in the past, present and future.
